NEW DELHI: Two Muslim men have died after they were attacked by Indian villagers who suspected them of stealing cows, police said Monday, the latest such attack over the animal Hindus consider sacred.

Police in the northeastern state of Assam said they had registered a murder case over the deaths of Abu Hanifa and Riyazuddin Ali who were beaten with sticks on Sunday. Two suspects have been detained for questioning.

“They were chased and beaten with sticks by villagers who said the two boys were trying to steal cows from their grazing field,” Debaraj Upadhyay, Nagaon’s top cop, told AFP by telephone. “By the time we took them to the hospital at night they had succumbed to their injuries,” he added.

The incident comes amidst a wave of rising tensions over the killing and smuggling of cows in Hindu-majority India, where the animal is considered sacred and its slaughter is a punishable offence in many states.

There have been a spate of attacks in recent months by ‘cow protection’ vigilante groups, who roam some highways inspecting livestock trucks for any trace of the animal.

A Muslim man died last month after his truck carrying cows was attacked by a group in western Rajasthan state.

But Updadhyay dismissed any suggestion that a vigilante group or association was involved in the latest incident.

In 2015, a Muslim man was lynched by his neighbours over rumours that he had slaughtered a cow. Police later said the meat was mutton. Critics say the vigilantes have been emboldened by the election in 2014 of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Last year Modi criticised the cow-protection vigilantes and urged a crackdown against groups using religion as a cover for committing crimes.

Yeah, so you walk into buxa tiger reserve and attempt to poach a tiger, then get shot back at by rangers for killing the animal and stealing, in all honesty, what were they expecting? baffling...

Police in India say two Muslim men have been lynched, allegedly by a mob, which accused them of trying to steal cows for slaughter.

The killings in the north-eastern state of Assam are the latest in a series of attacks blamed on hardline Hindu groups in recent months.

Hindus consider cows sacred and killing them is illegal in several states.

A Human Rights Watch report last week said at least 10 Muslims, have been killed over the issue since May 2015.

The victims of Sunday's attack in Assam's Nagaon district have been identified as Abu Hanifa and Riyazuddin Ali, police said.

"They were chased and beaten with sticks by villagers who said the two men were trying to steal cows from their grazing field," news agency AFP quoted senior police official Debaraj Upadhyay as saying.

"By the time we took them to the hospital at night they had succumbed to their injuries," he added.

A murder case has been registered and two people have been detained for questioning, police said.

The Human Rights Watch report says that since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party formed India's federal government in 2014, attacks against Muslims and Dalits have risen over rumours that they sold, bought, or killed cows for beef.

Those killed in the violent vigilante campaign against beef consumption include a 12-year-old boy.

Many states are now actively enforcing bans on cow slaughter and in March, the western state of Gujarat passed a law making the slaughter of cows punishable with life imprisonment.

In addition to government bans, several vigilante groups who portray themselves as protectors of cows have also been active in several states.

The groups routinely check vehicles and often beat up cattle traders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year criticised the vigilantes, saying such people made him "angry", but this has not stopped the attacks against cattle traders.

Good job,the thieves were caught red-handed,these cows are worth more then 1 lakh each, which is huge for poor villagers

People are killed for making harmless cartoons, here at least a cost factor is involved (cows are expensive).

Killing over cartoons is condemned and not considered a practice which should be hailed.

Will you condemn this? Otherwise keep your insensitive nonsense to yourself.

This is more to do with mob justice than to do with Gau rakshaks

Lynching of thieves has to stop. Sorry but that is not justice.

Violence of cattle was very common across the globe. Cattle theft often leads to violence. But those were the old days. Villagers must hand over anyone caught stealing anything, including cows.

The perps must be taught the value of rule of law. Nobody has the right to mete out punishments except courts.

Yes I condemn this. My point was this - people world over kill and get killed over religion, and this is going on from the time first god was invented. I am detaching this particular incident from religion and looking at it from economic issue. Cows for poor villagers are economic assets (like land), their subsistence depend on cows/cattles. If someone tries to steal your most valuable asset, on which you and your family depends, you would get aggressive (killing is still not justified though).

They weren't caught. It was 'suspicions'.

Most indians here support the killings showing how much indian society have been radicalized andn how much extremists have controlled their minds.
This is an act which should have been condemned by every human being. They never stole a cow just like previously the muslim man was not carrying cow meat but was killed.
It isn't something to kill someone but the reason behind killing was more of extremism and religious factors rather than any crime like stealing.
Hope justice is done but don't think it will be done.

Caught, suspected, red handed does not matter. They should have been handed over to police. The villagers must be booked for murder as that is what it is.

This is a failure of police too as villagers dont think they will actually punish the thieves who affect their livelihood. So they want to teach the thieves a lesson themselves, which is breaking the law. And murder is downright condemnable. Police / govt authority will further erode like this. The villagers should be taught not to mess with the law of the land.
