The 68th Republic Day parade at Delhi, India, displayed the military diversity of its defense system. It showcased its domestic National Security Guard (NSG), which was built to fight terrorism. But most importantly, India displayed some of the advanced yet indigenous military weapons. This was a revolutionary step for India towards becoming a self-sufficient superpower, not dependent on foreign allies to provide defense weapons.
Indigenous Weapons Display at Republic Day Parade
The celebrations of Republic Day kicked off with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar honoring the memory of the martyrs at India Gate. They were later joined by President Pranab Mukherjee and Abu Dhabi crown prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Rajpath. The NSG, consisting of 60 commandos in black, gave the President a ceremonial salute as they marched along.
Apart from that, an array of weapons proudly showing off India’s military might, were displayed at the parade. Among the weapons displayed were T-90 ‘Bhishma’ tank and Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP-2K. Also present were Mobile Autonomous Launcher of the BrahMos Missile System, Weapon Locating Raddar ‘Swathi’ and Akash Weapons System and Dhanush Gun System, reported Indian Express. All of them are largely manufactured within the nation. The endeavor to domesticate military weapons manufacturing was taken under President Modi’s “Make in India” program.
Modi’s ‘Made In India’ Initiative
Prior to the ceremony, defense expert P.K. Saighal praised the effort put in by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop indigenous weaponry that can prove to be instrumental in Indian military in the near future. “Since independence we have largely depended on foreign procurements for defending our nation and every time when there was a war like situation we were up against the tree. Sanctions were imposed, logistics managements were difficult and arranging spare parts was difficult,” admitted Saighal, reported India.
India wanted to do away with all these difficulties and dependencies. Hence, DRDO made weapons without importing parts and technology from abroad. It even designed the 3 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Aircraft flying in a “vic” formation, above the attendees at the ceremony. India also manufactured armed underwater carriers like Kolkata Class Destroyer and the Kalvari Class next generation attack submarines. With this, India could be looking at a new era of true independence when it comes to military strength.
