What's new

India makes Huge defense spending cuts

It's good for India; Army will now be forced to opt for indigenous products;
HAL - LUH instead of eurocopter
probably revival for IJT with new vigor
OFB 155mm bofor guns
L&T 155mm Self propelled arty
Rustom H and Rustom MALE instead of IAI UAV's
Which will never till eternity like Arjun and LCA.

We don't need Good economy to buy these weapon system i think we need good friend like china who can give us what ever we want for long term loan ,Pakistani are street smart people they have all the weapons needed to counter us .they have their own JF-17 ,F-22 frigate,Agosta 90,chinese sub coming, awacs system ,MRLS,Khalid tank,Anza1,2,3,Baktar sikhan. how much did they pay for these system ? way less then us because we have the most corrupt politician in the world .

they know how to spend their limited money most of the system i mention are made in Pakistan
and now compare with what we make .

for us indigenious is only option
I think india must close down OFB like PSUs and which dont make even better toy guns and start importing guns from derra Adam khel. that will save lot of money even india can import JF-17 and Al-zarrar tanks from pakistan instead of buying Rafale and wasting money on LCA and arjun and T-90s.

It may also have to do with threat assessment,
India may have found that its actually overbloating the threat from Pakistan's Military and that it already has the assets it needs to defend against external aggression from the immediate threat(terrorist camps etc).

Its also realizing that it still needs a lot of work to compete with China and that it needs redundancy in its economy.
The threat from the Chinese military isnt something it has to deal with tomorrow, but in the next 10 to 20 years.
The military can fall behind two to three years, but it cannot afford for its economy to fall behind.

And the most important thing is that India and Pakistan relation is improving and above all India can only compete with China if her Economy is good or else....there is no point in having latest army when our economy will be in bad shape...

Even if heaven forbid there is another 26/11 and relations go sour again, India now has confidence in its ability to tackle any and all threats on the western front effectively without excessive losses and secure its borders without fear of severe repercussions on its citizens or grassroots economy.
Hence its realization that the western situation is already breaking down to the point where it will automatically cycle itself to a massive reduction in terms of a conventional threat and an increase in unconventional ones. Also, it knows that it can then target these unconventional threats and deliver a message effectively without incurring a conventional scenario.

India needs to invest as much as possible into building up their roads, railways and manufacturing infrastructure. India's recent economic stagnation will remain or worsen until it can effectively address these issues. Only a stronger economy will allow India to compete with the likes of China, but India will always lag behind until they address the fundamentals of basic and comprehensive infrastructure. India have been trying to go the quick route of achieving military might by buying up foreign armaments. But this method is dependent on Western and Russian expertise for maintenance and spare parts, which is self-defeating and uneconomical. Only by building up your infrastructure, manufacturing base and research base will India start to achieve great things, otherwise they will always be dependent on foreign asssistance and India's progress remain stunted.

Rafale deal is worth more than 100,000 crores. But what many fail to realise is that all ~ 20 billions are
not spent at one point, there're spread over a no. of years, over a no. of different budgets.

Deals likley to be affected are those where cheaper alternatives are available.

And not to forget that more than 30-40% of these 20 billion USD will be ploughed back into India in the
form of offsets, the opening of a new production line in Bangalore means several 1,000s more jobs.

.
A lot of noise about nothing! This is not a "cut" it is defering a few select purchases and that too is not confirmed. $5-6 BN is not a huge amount. If anything was to happen it would simply be defering signing certain deals until FY2013. I see no reason why this extremely short term measure will affect long term procurements like the FICV which will not enter service format least another 7-8 years! And the MMRCA deal is ring-fenced,come hell or high water this deal WILL be signed by March 2013.

A temporary blip- that is all. Calm down!

Correctly assessed.

India has the dubious distinction of being among the top ten on two very different lists: It ranks at the top of the nations of the world with its 270 million illiterate adults, the largest in the world, as detailed by a just released UNESCO report on education; India also shows up at number four in military spending in terms of purchasing power parity, behind United States, China and Russia.

What guns? License-built MP-5s? Nah thanks MSMC is far better than it.

JF-17 is not produced in Pakistan. We need to import it from China if we're gonna import it all!

Al-zarrar is a modified T-55/Type-59/69. Our T-72M1 is far better than it, we have 1,000s of them.

Don't get so over exited cuz some member decided to lol his tongue around a bit, a small gust of
wind is enough to make you people scream "hurricane!!".

But India only spends 2% of its GDP on defence. If you are attacking India for spending this much then surely you feel more angry to the Paksitan government that spends anywhere from 5-25% of GDP on defence. And India is dramatically reducing poverty numbers- I dare say Paksitan isn't on the same scale.

Also this word "cut" is misleading. India's defence budget will NOT be cut, for the FY2012-13 it is ~$42 BN and this is guaranteed. All this news is stating is the POSSIBILITY of defering defence spending OVER this $42BN for certain purchases.

74% of Indians aged 15 and above are literate (82%of males and 65% of females) as per "latest"
figures from last year (2011).

And only 55% of Pakistanis are literate (68% of males and 40% of females)
as of 2009. Wishing anyone who can provide more latest figures.

Guys this is just hot air:

Cash-strapped govt to cut defence spending? - Times Of India

This is from way back in FEBRUARY!! Did it happen? NO!!

All it this news is saying is the DM will REVIEW modernisation projects NOT cut them! There is defiantly vested interests at work here- time and time again we hear news coming out of NOWHERE saying x will happen, y will happen but NOTHING happens!

And I'm sure the opposition would take the GoI task over this if this were to happen- India hasn't taken such a measure in rect years and this is an easy point scoring opportunity.

And guys let's not forget every year the Indian military returns BILLIONS to the MoF in unspent funds- the cash is there!!
