India Key to U.S. Afghan Success

If even by now you have not come to accept the fact that India has civilizational links with the Afghan people and that they regard us highly as compared to their other neighbours, I'd only say that you're living in denial.

There are no civilizational links with India today, the civilization that linked Afghanistan & the Indian subcontinent has pretty much gone. There is nothing common between the average Afghan & average Indian, & no, most Afghans do not know anything about India; forget about liking or disliking them. India is alien to Afghans. You have no linguistic, cultural, historical or geographical ties with them.

91% of the Afghan population did not know what happened on 9/11, do you think they really know anything about India? Do you thing they even have an internet connection?

.
India's soft power is due to its media and in particular Bollywood Movies which are very popular in Afghanistan.

And your logic is that since they do not know about 9/11 they do not know about India?

1. Who do you think supported the Northern Alliance before the US stepped in? Iran and India.
2. Who do you think provides the highest regional aid to Aghanistan? India
3. Construction of roads, hospitals and school. India
4. Getting Afganistan into Saarc? India
5. Bringing business in besides aid.

That's what India is known for there. Progress. Not military intervention. Not boots on the ground. Progress. Now figure what you could have done right in that country besides running around and supporting people who blast archeological sites and shut down schools.

As long as the Afghans want us there, you will see Indian investment.

not only this but of many other reasons:
India had always good relations with Afghanistan except for Taliban period.
India is the highest donor to Afghanistan in the region.
On the one had Pakistan has tried to colonize Afghanistan for "strategic depth" in it's fight against India, India on the other hand have always maintain relations with Afghanistan on equality.
Pakistan supported barbaric Talibans, whom no one in Afghanistan liked.
India is giving every support to Afghans which it can give like training soldiers, giving education, hospitals, etc.

This & many more are the reasons for Afghans having a respect for India & the Indians.

They tried the rusted key for 10 years and it didnt get them anywhere.. Finally they have realized their folly and the changed approach is now seen in daily bombardments on Pakistani soil by NATO air assets.. Looks like they are all set to throw away the junk key...

 Not only for the last 10 years but since the soviets left, i.e. 1989. that's 23 years.

Try to bring these changes in India first then think about foriegn land.

I usually dont indulge in mudslinging but the first three options yes i agree with you ...we need it more right here in india .

And yet again and again polls of Afghani people show they have genuine fondness for India and rank them number 1 in most favoured nations. the development aid is money well spent by India.

+ don't Underestimate the power and reach of Bollywood!

And how much does that add up to? A billion dollars?? Whats your billion against more than trillion the US has spent and yet they are losing and wont have much influnece after this retreat.

In the hindsight, that billion would have been better spent mitigating multitude of India's own problems. That investment in Afghanistan is wated money. You and your new found allies are trying to force a govt and a system that Afghans will never accept, Pakistan notwithstanding.

.
Well my friend no body has seen the future. I don't think I agree with you but who knows, you could be right.
Afghanistan is very unpredictable. But it was not always boiling with jihadis. It was peaceful( at least for us) before Soviets came in.
Some day it will go back to being that. How long??? We will have to see.

Even your government offered $500 million to afghanistan, did you ask them to invest it curbing your problems. These are diplomatic measures to strengthen ties.....if giving $ 2 billion helps us getting some goodwill and acceptance in Afghanistan then they will happily allow us to tap their resources. Always try to look at the bigger picture.

Problem is Indians have forgotten they have no border with Afghanistan and Americans well they were never any good at geograph.

American Geography - YouTube

So what if India has no land border? Somehow India still manages to be the most liked nation consistently by the Afghan people.

And btw, if it comes to it- the C-17 has a ~3,000 (with no AAR) mile range- more than enough to get to Afghanistan via Iran or whatever route the IAF Want.

there is no need of direct border when people are connected with one another emotionally, in this globalized world of today, nations don't need direct border to maintain cordial relations with one another, look at Indo-Russian relations or US-Israel relations. If border did mattered than in Afghanistan people would have been watching lollywood movies not bollywood movies ..... :)
