The decision was taken at the two-day plenary meeting of the grouping in Vienna.
In a significant development, elite export control regime Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) on Thursday decided to admit India as its new member, which is expected to raise New Delhi’s stature in the field of non-proliferation besides helping it acquire critical technologies.

The decision was taken at the two-day plenary meeting of the grouping in Vienna.

“Existing controls were further clarified regarding ground stations for spacecraft, submarine diesel engines, technology related to intrusion software, software for testing gas turbine engines, analogue-to-digital converters, non- volatile memories and information security,” the grouping said in the statement at the end of the two-day meeting.

The next regular plenary meeting of WA will be held in Vienna in Austria in December 2018, it was announced.

Hmm, that should make advanced technology easily accessible to India. It makes no difference whether we are in NSG or not till we get access to required technology. China can spend their time vetoing like a petulant kid.

. . .
It is not waste of time, China can easily veto it without much effort.. it is the least tiring task.. just say veto and india can only huff and puff but there is nothing much it can do.
China says no change in its stand on India's membership to NSG
do you have a comprehension problem ? veto or no veto we still get technology access thats what matters not some useless veto. We will gain more technology access through which we will fine tune our missiles & nuke tech, while china keeps throwing fits.

So useless veto is more important but China say it won't change its position.

China says no change in its stand on India's membership to NSG

They never utter the word Veto which means "I forbid"

There is a voting phase which comprises of 3 layers:
1) Vote for
2) Vote against
3) Abstentions

If a permanent (P-5) member raises the hand for the "Votes against" category, that bill is not adopted. This is considered as a negative vote = Veto.

So useless veto is more important but China say it won't change its position.

No NSG membership means no nuclear related (Military application) technology transfer or equipment for India.

Please educate your Indian friend who is out to deride you with snide remarks.

Techonology transfer? NSG is nuclear suppliers group, it has limited control when comes to technology. Without NSG, uranium supplies for your country are limited but India has waiver for long. Multiple countries are vying to supply uranium to India of late. India is actually spoiled of choice. MTCR is one that controls military techonology transfers which India is member and China is not. With Wassanaar done and joining of the australian group round the corner, India is defacto nuclear power whether China likes it or not.

Oh by the way, its NSG not UN. There's no P-5 grouping in NSG. The membership is given on absolute consenses. China has much power as Cyprus in the grouping.

Exactly , we already have a waiver as such it makes no difference NSG or not.

yeah ur right , useless is useless.

India and Wassenaar arrangement

1. Access to dual-use technologies: Membership of the Wassenaar Arrangement would open up access to dual-use technologies - that can be used for both civil and military purposes - in aerospace, telecommunications, navigation, computing, electronics, sensors and lasers.

2. Boost to NSG membership: Gaining its membership would also help India lobby better for membership in the NSG as many of its members are also members of NSG and will further give credibility.

• International support:

1. Like the MTCR, the Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia group don't have China as a member. China is holding up India’s membership in the NSG.

Meets the membership criteria:

1. India has impeccable non-proliferation record, which stood it in good stead during the deliberations on NSG waiver.

2. India had passed the Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery

Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Act in June 2005, fulfilling its obligations under UNSC Resolution 1540, which required UN member states to enact domestic legislation to better account for WMD materials and technology.

But then why does india cries when China vetoes it? Why this hypocrisy?

Because we need legitimacy to the Nuclear Weapons in our procession and in future, export Nuclear materials, Nuclear fuels. We already enjoys the same status as a full member, but we don't need to stay outside the grouping.

Thanks for the correction though I knew it already but I was just talking figuratively. "Raising the hand against" does not change the gist of my comment which is about the effort China has put into vetoing india's bid for NSG. India cannot harm China in anyway both militarily or diplomatically. USA is scared of China's rise and seeing an end to its hegemony to it is backing India but rest of the west does not share this sentiment with USA. EU is pretty happy to trade with China and wants to foster closer ties. I know it because I'm in the business here and know how European business think. Also for them India does not matter that much as Modi would like all indians to believe. Do you remember the remarks by the CEO of SnapChat a few months ago? A lot of CEO's share his views, they just don't say it publicly or get quoted by media.

Then tell this to your mate who says it is "useless"
