India on Thursday joined 127 other countries to vote in the United Nations General Assembly in favour of a resolution opposing the recent decision of United States President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Nine countries voted against the resolution, while as many as 35 countries abstained.

India's decision to vote against American recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital comes a day after Trump warned countries against opposing the US position.

India did not speak on the floor of the Assembly in New York, but after Trump recognised the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it had said that its Palestine position was independent and consistent.

In her intervention at the Non-Aligned Movement ministerial meeting on Palestine on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had said the path to Israel-Jerusalem peace clearly lay in an early negotiated solution between Israel and Palestine based on mutual recognition and security arrangements.

The UN General Assembly resolution moved by Turkey and Yemen stressed that Jerusalem was a final status issue to be resolved through negotiations.

It demanded that all States comply with Security Council resolutions regarding Jerusalem, and not recognise any actions or measures contrary to those resolutions.

In his address to the UN general Assembly, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Trump's decision was an outrageous assault to all universal values.

"The Palestinians have the right to their own state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital," he said.

"This is the main parameter and only hope for a just and lasting peace in the region. However, the recent decision of a UN Member State to recognise Jerusalem, or Al-Quds, as the capital of Israel, violates international law, including all relevant UN resolutions," Cavusoglu said.

The eight countries that joined the US in voting against the Turkish resolution were Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo.

Among the major countries who abstained the voting were Australia, Bhutan, Canada, Columbia, Hungry, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines, Poland and Uganda.

Strongly supporting Trump's decision US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley warned that the US may strip funding of those countries that voted against its Jerusalem move.

"The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly. We will remember it when we are called upon to, once again, make the world's largest contribution to the United Nations," Haley told the General Assembly.

"America will put our embassy in Jerusalem. That is what the American people want us to do, and it is the right thing to do. No vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that. But this vote will make a difference in how Americans view the UN," the top American diplomat said.

Trump had warned against cutting funds on Wednesday.

"Let them vote against us, we'll save a lot. We don't care. This isn't like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they're doing," Trump told reporters at White House on Wednesday.

Early this week, the US had vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council.

The resolution passed by the General Assembly has no legal implications on the UN member countries. Trump praised Haley for taking a tough position on Jerusalem at the world body on Wednesday and warned the countries who voted against the US that America will not be 'taken advantage' of anymore.

"All these nations take our money and then vote against us at the Security Council," Trump told his Cabinet members at a meeting at the White House.

He was referring to the isolation of the US in the UN Security Council when all 14 members of the apex body joined hands against Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

I thought i'd never say this , At least not until Modi is in Power but India did make a Sensible Decision .
lol I wonder what Nikki Haley must be thinking because she is an Indo-American.

Yes to be honest India actually made a sensible decision this time.

Thanks God for that.

India had no choice, they have 200 million Muslims, if they voted for Israel their country would be torn apart.

If Modi and the Hinutva brigade had their way, they would be helping Israel to build settlements in East Jerusalem.

India is having independence foreign policy and this is beauty of Indian diplomacy around the world.

India is having good relationship with Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, US and Russia. And also good good economy relationship with China.

Without independence foreign policy, it is not possible. I love Indian diplomacy...

lol, to be quite frank but I never thought I would say this to an Indian, but this is something that India did right.

However there are some members saying that India really did not have a choice in this.

I doubt that , Indian Muslims so far has shown no sign of tearing apart , the one who did are today well settled in Pakistan ;)

If Modi and the Hinutva brigade had their way, they would be helping Israel to build settlements in East Jerusalem.

It is indeed shocking for me that Modi Administration did that , RSS and BJP are die hard supporter of Israeli's and Israel maintain their stance on India as Victims of Terrorism .

Modi visited Israel (far far more significant than UN drama voting), breaking all previous "protocol" w.r.t Muslim domestic sensibilities etc.

The country is very much in one piece thanks.
That is true, Modi visited Israel several times this year.

India aside, I was really surprised at Mexico abstaining instead of supporting the resolution, given how Trump keeps insulting them over and over again. It would've been a nice "fvck you too" in response to Trump's "bad hombres", "they send us their rapists" speeches and of course The Wall.

It's a shame mighty Mexicans didn't have the courage of tiny Costa Ricans or Nicaraguans.

Your knowledge of india and its ground realities is very week, placing you in a newbie category.
Nobody is tearing its homeland just because some country half a way across the globe is moving its embassy to some city who one would never visit in its lifetime.

You are right, India has never been torn apart by Indian Muslims before.

Alright so India just spat in Israel's face, why exactly?
