India Is Seventh Nation to Process Titanium Sponge

State Govt. of Orissa, TTPL ink MoU for titanium project.

The State government and Titanium Products Private Limited (TPPL), a joint venture company between the Government of Russia Federation and Kolkota based SARAF Group, on Wednesday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up an integrated titanium chemical and metallurgical complex at Chhatrapur in Ganjam district.

With an estimated investment of Rs. 2,000 crore, the project will have titanium slag, titanium dioxide pigment, titanium sponge and pig iron facilities.

While the first phase of the plant which is scheduled to be completed in 24 months, would produce 1.08 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) titanium slag, the 40,000-TPA titanium dioxide facility would be ready for operation by mid 2011. Similarly, the 10,000-TPA titanium sponge unit will start production by mid 2012.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “this project will help establishment of downstream industries in sectors like high quality paint manufacturing, automotive casting, ductile iron casting, silicon and zircon based products and magnesium metal.”

The titanium project alone would add employment capacity of around 1,200 persons while the employment capacity of the related industries would be many more, Mr. Patnaik said.
