What's new

India is no match for China in the SAARC summit

My ancestors were not "indian"

and "indian" was the name to describe that which was under British Raj...as a country, "india" became one in 1947....before that it was a giant landmass of states including princely states all geographically connected but culturally distinct. Before that a land whose borders kept changing through invasions and conquests. Quit wasting time talking like an RSS chai wala and stick to the subject at hand. No more self serving mental masturbation.....yes?

All ancient countries' borders have changed with time, and nation states are new concept. Stop trying too hard, some concepts are beyond your mental abilities.

Btw, sorry for asking you to 'think' in my previous post.

Looks like people here have confused notions about a nationhood. The concept of modern nation began in Europe around the 19th century and spread to the rest of the world. Before that the ruler of a land mass decided the nation and not the people. So in times of Ashoka, Akbar and Aurangzeb the rulers of Afghanistan and Bengal were the same. The Ottoman and Persian Empire included much wider geographical region than what is Turkey and Iran are today. People were least concerned whether they were ruled by one king or another. Until the birth of modern nationalism, no country in the world was bothered about the geographical changes as it changed with every ruler and it kept changing during his regime also.

When modern nationhood was spreading, India was under the British rule and Indian nationalism became synonymous with her struggle for freedom from the British Rule. This was the uniting factor and eventually it became so strong that despite having many religions, races, languages and geographical features, India developed a strong sense of nationhood. What you see China today, it was not the same in the first half of 20th century. In fact, most nations took the shape of modern nation after the second world war by when the people had started relating themselves with a national boundary. Every nation has something core for their nationhood - some are a nation because they speak one language, some follow one religion or custom. But still a language or a religion is not the essential ingredient for a nationhood. If that was so the Arab speaking muslims will not be divided into many nations. However, the Indian nationhood perplexes many who think that a religion or a language forms the basis of a nationhood and hence wrongly assume that India is held together artificially.

Brilliant post!!! :)

Pakistan should push a unilateral vote on the next SAARC summit in Islamabad. China is going to win the vote. India will veto it and yet again face the embarrassment of the veil being lifted from its true ambitions. We want China in SAARC or its future is in the dark.

Where did you see any veil? We very clearly and very openly don't want china in a "South Asian Association", SAARC was not created to promote china's political ambitions here, Pakistan can do it in any other platform; not in SAARC.

And Pakistan should worry about its own future instead of SAARC's, while all other SA countries are improving cooperation with each other; Pakistan is seen busy promoting the interest of china.

China will continue to throw bones on other "non all weather friends" to gain more support.
India has to match or maybe double what China is offering to these countries like Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

India can use its military muscle to bring the eastern side of countries in line in this regard because once China gets in the SAARC then it will be game over for India.

India can launch a counter offensive and twist the arms of countries like Nepal, Maldives and Bangladesh to repeal the China's observer status get a majority/ popular vote. or it can lobby for American full status

Or India can simply use its veto power!

Pakistan was the one who was against SAARC proposals of inter connectivity while the rest of SAARC nations signed it, PM Modi has already said SAARC will move ahead with or without Others(in this case he implies Pakistan, trying to throw spanner in trade and other deals).
Expect Pakistan to be out of SAARC in next 5 years.

Chinese potential full membership has really messed up Indian thinking process. you need to spend money to keep the smaller countries on Indian side but here China might outbid you

.
We will not allow China in SAARC, if Pakistan dnt like then they can leave any time

this veto power might become stale if almost every other country starts favouring Chinese inclusion.
such drastic use of veto power will basically kill the essence of this organisation.

LEAVE?

yaar phudu .. we are planning on bringing China IN.. if you dont like it then you can leave..
or just stay and keep crying :)

SAARC has its uses. Otherwise, SAARC observer countries, such as the US, China, the EU, Japan, Iran, Australia and South Korea would not be pushing hard for a greater role in this eight-nation grouping. In fact, some observers, like China, want full membership.

China is the most important country in this region and it should be a member of SAARC. I am sure if China joins SAARC it will infuse new life into this otherwise impotent organization.
