What's new

India is my home, says Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen

Didn't touch Muslim personal laws since he knew his """"""""secular"""""""" country would be ravaged if he did so.

Very sensible. That whole community had just lost its leadership, that decamped to make Karachi a criminal slum and lead the PA into painful fixes that it couldn't handle. What they didn't need at that vulnerable moment was the whole apparatus of state to descend on it and ask for far-reaching changes.

It's the new 'in' thing on the web.

All is clear. I suppose we need characters of all sorts.

Basically regional parties trying to cash in on the minority vote by putting up token resistance to Hindoo domination. And Congress. Lol.

No. Decent individuals who are not connected with any political party, nor have any political ambitions themselves, but have an active social conscience.

I realise that you have difficulty understanding this.

It goes back further than Bhutto, right back to the Objectives Resolution.

The Islamic Republic specifically; that was Bhutto's baby.

It would be sensible if India was not keeping up pretensions of being shecular. Nothing wrong with ghettoized and backwards communities 70 years after independence when you're not actively squatting on most of the subcontinent on the basis of being a harmonious utopia.

The problem is that in India, political ambitions are closely tied with activism. Just take for example those JNU protests and how they became an issue of national politics. Or how the award-returning campaign by a number of Indian writers became an issue of national politics. Or how an organization dedicated to promoting Hindu culture is closely involved with the current Indian government.

The Islamic Republic specifically; that was Bhutto's baby.

If you want to oversimplify things, yes.

I would have supported her if she was engaged in constructive criticism of religion like Avijit Roy and others rather than writing cheap pornographic novels. She is not even a nominal class writer. She also wrong on her idea of merging Bangladesh with India and harping on 1947 partition.Perhaps it is good for her to remain in India.

So she became Wajib ul qutla?

Recently Dalai lama said that he is an indian and he has become the ambassador of encient indian values of Non Violence and compassion.

If they give her a platform, and the Congress is scared to do that, and the CPM were the people who drove her out, why not?

Did they really give the platform to criticize all religions or it was exclusively limited to Islam? That's the point...

If I claim to be a secularist and yet go on to speak in a conference, arranged by say Hefazat, only to criticize Hinduism, I would just turn out to be biased against Hinduism which is grossly against the secular principles... But then again, it's all about individual perceptions...

The principle is VERY clear. We should each of us stick to criticising our own religion. There is no need for the kind of obnoxious idiot who studies another religion just to tear it to bits: religion is a system of faith, and has little or nothing to do with reasoning. Idiots I mentioned are Zakir Naik and Arun Shourie.

The word is 'wajib ul qatal'. The term was 'invented' about twenty years ago. I have not heard about the term from my elders or Imams in the mosques, ever. 'Qatal' is not an easy term to be thrown about in Islam - especially for sufis.

More specifically, Taslima does not deserve the status of said moniker. She is just a small embarrassment (and cause of local discord) for our nation whom we have more or less disowned.

It is curious that some have turned her into a 'prima donna' of the anti-Muslim cause in certain circles in India.

CANACONA (Goa): Noted Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on Saturday said India is her home and she has no alternative but to live in exile for rest of her life.

"I have been living in exile since 1994. I know I have no other alternative but to live in exile for rest of my life. I feel I have nowhere to go or country to return to. I say now India is my country, India is my home," the 54-year-old writer told the gathering at the "India Ideas Conclave 2016", currently underway in Goa.

The Conclave is organised by India Foundation.

"How much more we have to suffer at the hands of fundamentalists and their political allies for daring to articulate the truth. Even after all that has happened, I still believe, that sincere honest truly secular part of the continent, India is the safe refuge, only refuge," said the writer.

"They must understand that Islam must go through enlightenment process similar to that other religion that has gone through by questioning the inhuman, unequal, unscientific and irrational aspects of the religion," she said referring to the fundamentalists.

"The narrow minded and the political (people) will forever throw society into the darkness, quiet a handful others will always strive for betterment of society and good sense prevail.

"It is only few special people who seek to dream about change, that is how it has always been," Nasreen, the writer of much acclaimed book "Lajja" said.

Very truly said Tasleema that Islam should also go through critical scrutiny that applies all other religions. Why it is to exempted? Its foolish to believe that whatever the mullas say or explain is... Read MoreReality Check

Talking about Bangladesh, she said, "I truly hope that the secular movement in my country will begin and turn into positive political movement for true democracy and secular state. The state which will govern on equality and educational system that is secular, scientific."

"People must know that Islam must not be exempted from the critical scrutiny that applies all other religions as well," said the writer.

Is she running out of money again? Every time she runs low on funds, she says something.

I think it's horrible she was chased out of the country - threatening to kill someone automatically makes them a winner, regardless of how much of a douche they are. I'm glad she thinks India is home and loves it there. Good for her.

She's trying, maybe one day she'll be Salman Rushdie
