India is in advanced stage of building robots




Indian is in an advanced stage of building robots said Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Director S. Guru Prasad.

Inaugurating the four-day national convention titled ‘Yantrik-2012’ on Robotics and Mechatronics, on the K.L. University campus at Vaddeswaram village in Guntur district on Thursday, he advised the students to choose specialised subjects in the related technology for Post-Graduate courses.

As the director for Research and Development (R&D), at Pune, Mr. Prasad participated as key resource person at the programme being organised by Mechanical Engineering Department of the KL University in association with Robotics Core School, Chennai and Jaypee Institution of Information and Technology, Noida.The scientist said that at present India is using robots in defence service and very soon the machines would enter in to other fields across the country.

Robots, which were fit for unmanned battle fields, can be used for different applications including handling of explosives, space applications, adverse atmospheric conditions, rescue operations during natural calamities and major accidents, for assisting sick and the aged people at homes and other purposes, he observed.

The DRDO Director in his keynote address explained the budding engineers on the fundamentals of robotics and different types of operations of the unmanned object, which was very useful in future.

Focus on research

Koneru Lakshmaiah University Chancellor G.L. Datta and Vice-Chancellor R. Sri Hari Rao said that the institution was in the forefront in encouraging research activities and asked the students to make use of the workshop.

Koneru Lakshmaiah College of Engineering (KLCE) principal Prof. A. Ananda Kumar, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department Prof. Y.V. Hanumantha Rao, programme convenor A. Srinath and others spoke. Associate professor V.L. Krishnan presented vote of thanks.

I would say define robots...daksh has already entered in the IA and BMP-2 based unmanned ground vehicle has been under tests since 2010.

An armed version of that category of robot is available and has been shown in drdo booth since 2008. But its useless to army. It can be used by NSG in situation like the ones in Taj hotel.

I think the article is talking about unmanned BMP vehicle (UGV). It is meant for IA as it is the only robotic vehicle built in India that could be used during the war.

You must be talking about ASIMO...

Its a marvel. That machine is nowhere ready to be used in battle scenario, in fact other than tech demonstration its of no use. Believe alot of man hour and millions of lines of coding is responsible for this cool machine.

In fact a humanoid is not that stable human body is exceptional case but other than not many species can stand on two legs for long time forget about carrying something while on two legs.

In short Humanoids are good in movies but in not in real world. The unmanned BMP is good beacuse first its all-terrain and even can pass through water and it can carry weapons too. It could be used in casualty evacuation and can be used in NBC environment.

What India did is a smart move unlike US build unmanned MULE where they designed a whole new machine and it doesn't have so many uses because of its small size as compared to indian UGV and india instead used a fully tested vehicle and then automated it ?
