Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured India that the South Asian country is a priority for Beijing’s foreign policy, saying that the two Asian neighbours should work together to develop their economies.
During his meeting with visiting Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari in the Chinese capital on Tuesday, Xi stressed that his country has always considered India as a strategic partner. According to him, Beijing and New Delhi should promote the construction of a regional economic corridor through Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar. The Indian vice president, who arrived in New Delhi after attending a function commemorating the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Panchsheel agreement between the two countries during his five-day visit to Beijing, agreed that India and China could rise together. He also said that the two neighbouring countries should consider each other as partners, and not as rivals. Ansari, too, assured the top Chinese leadership that India would handle the outstanding bilateral issues sensitively. During his stay in Beijing, the Indian vice president held a separate meeting with his Chinese counterpart Li Yuanchao and witnessed the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Among these three MoUs, one was on industrial parks and another on sharing of flood data of Brahmaputra River. As per the MoU on industrial parks, Beijing will help New Delhi in setting up such parks in different Indian cities that will help attract huge Chinese investments apart from providing an enabling framework for Chinese companies to invest in the South Asian country. The two countries, meanwhile, agreed to increase the volume of mutual investment in each other’s economies on the basis of relevant domestic laws and regulations of each party. The third MoU will allow China and India to prepare a framework for regular interactions between their top officials so that they can share experiences and learn from each others’ best practices.
