India-Iran vs. China-Pakistan in port rivalry

In a curious twist of events, the U.S. is now indirectly backing the construction of a mega-port in Iran. Earlier this week the leaders of India, Iran, and Afghanistan signed a transit agreement centering on the Iranian port of Chabahar -- a clear riposte to the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with its terminus in the Pakistani port of Gwadar, only 45 miles east.

China’s plans to turn Gwadar into an economic hub could reshape the region’s geopolitics. It would give China a new trade link from its relatively undeveloped West to key Arabian Sea shipping routes at the mouth of the oil-rich Persian Gulf — and might someday be a base for projecting Chinese naval influence, as Blouin News wrote last year.

Meanwhile, Delhi is keen to expand its economic links to Central Asia while completely circumventing archrival Pakistan. (India considers the current routes to those countries unreliabledue to Islamabad stalling the Indian goods that pass through Pakistani territory.) So India has had its eye on Chabahar for years, but its investment is only going through now after most U.S. sanctions against Iran were lifted earlier this year.

"For India to be able to contribute to the economic development of Afghanistan, it needs access that it does not readily have across its land boundary. And India is seeking to deepen its energy relationship with the Central Asian countries and looking for routes that would facilitate that," U.S. assistant secretary of state for South Asia Nisha Desai Biswal told the Senate foreign relations committee on Tuesday.

Indian P.M. Narendra Modi’s visit to Iran this week resulted in the signing of 12 agreements, including $500 million financing for the development of the port of Chabahar. An Indian firm and an Iranian firm will jointly undertake the 10-year port construction, while another Indian company will fund and develop the $1.6 billion Chabahar-Zahedan railway line. India also plans to invest $16 billion in the Chabahar free trade zone.

“There is no comparison in scale and intent between China’s role in Gwadar and India’s in Chabahar, but the Americans are pleased that India is pushing back against the Chinese expansionist mindset," said South Asia expert and author Adam V. Larkey. Likewise, Biswal assured the senators that Washington has been "very clear with the Indians what our security concerns have been and we would continue to engage them on those issues."

In this complex mishmash of geopolitics, Washington's two most reliable friends are India and Afghanistan, and Iran is the only way to circumvent Pakistan, whose relationship with the U.S. is as turbulent as ever. Washington's tacit approval is fine, as long as it keeps a close eye on what's going on and no U.S. funding or security presence is required for the Chabahar scheme to work.

I dont think iran is against Pak... its just india who is trying its best to agitate Pak. trying to exploit conflicts between Pak and neighbours like what they did in Bangladesh..first Mody went to india admited that indian state were behind 71 then they tried to sobtage Pak SL JF17 deal... then hiding behind US and giving them ground intel against Talib.. convience afghanies that Pak is their enemy when Pak is holding 4 millions afghans refugees from last 35 years... and now India conviencing iran to cancel Pak iran gas pipeline and try to do anything possible to derail CEPEC.. At the same time india is crying on their TV channels and barking hate against Pak..
indian propaganda is on its Peak...
India spreading state terrorism in region.. sooner or later devil gonna knocks on its door.

start massive trading activities with UAE,SAUDI ARABI and massive port operations with these states through gawadar, chabahar will useful for afghanistan only even after investing containers of dollar india could get nothing

while we need to be determined and vigilant to threats to the CPEC project, we must not be surprised by the sever diarrhea that this project is causing to certain nations. It is a strategic project ostensibly being developed as an economic hub. It will have vast geostrategic and geopolitical dimensions too. Nations currently having monopoly or leverage in the Indian ocean/ Arabian Sea will try their utmost to turn it into a colossal failure. Nations having leaders with clear vision and solid determination certainly surmount difficulties and defeat negative forces. We'll inshaAllah do that and defeat the regional/global negative forces. It is important that we don't perceive Gwadar and Chabahar as rival ports. We and Iranians don't want that. But the negative forces are trying hard to turn the two ports and the two neighborly Muslim countries into rivals. We need to keep fully focused to turn the CPEC into reality and a success. Fortunately we (Pakistan and China) don't need any help from the negative forces. Pakistan needs to make sure the rule of law in the country. All badmaash groups, mafias, terrorists, and corrupts need to be wiped out if we want this project to really benefit us all.

What if both Pakistan and Iran combine/link CPEC and Chabahar at some point for mutual benefit. Iran will benefit more, though Pakistan may seek to filter Indian exports through CPEC, it would still benefit Iran, Pakistan and China. Iran will get access to Chinese economy and Central Asia, and Pakistan-China will get access to Turkey. I see a very gigantic network of roads and rails connecting this part of the world. However a certain corner won't be happy and would try to create as much hurdles as possible. But if Pak-Iran-China are determined, they can do it.

its planned already... we will connect both china and Iran, Iran will connect Pakistan and China with Turkey.. Pakistan and China both are connected with India through land borders... we dont need Chahbahar for trade with India or any other country.. China is connected with central asia, it will be our best bet for central asia route..

What CPEC can do for Pakistani economy , nothing else can do. This all hype, has no value , just ignore. And CPEC logistics security is Pak army project.

What exactly CPEC can do for Pakistani economy?
