India inaugurates indigenous sonar simulator

A sonar simulator developed by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO's) naval physical and oceanographic laboratory (NPOL) has been set up at INS Satavahana, the Indian Navy's submarine training establishment, situated in Visakhapatnam on India's east coast.

A statement on the navy's website describes the simulator as able to demonstrate active and passive sonar concepts.

The simulator will complement a range of other training systems currently in use at Satavahana, such as a diving basin for submarine escape training and an electronic support measures (ESM) simulator complex (the latter opened in July 2010).

COMMENT
Besides being used to train Indian submariners, INS Satavahana has also been used to teach underwater fighting skills to international navies.
