India in talks to buy Iron Dome, David's Sling

"Defense News" reports that India is in talks to buy Israel's ground-based rocket and missile interceptor systems Iron Dome and David's Sling.

David's Sling, designed to intercept medium-range missiles (70-240 kilometers range), is being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN). The system is also n the Ministry of Defense.

Indian Ministry of Defence sources told "Defense News" negotiations between the Israeli and Indian governments on a deal for David's Sling had been going on for more than six months. The sources added that Israel was open to sales of David's Sling, but that it would not transfer the system's technology as part of a deal.

The sources said that India was developing its own missile interception system for short and medium range missiles (50-80 kilometer range), known as the PAD. However, this system cannot intercept low-flying cruise missiles. This may be the reason why India is interested in the Israeli system.

An Indian Ministry of Defence official said that neither its aging Russian-built air defense systems nor the PAD system can serve as the country' sole line of defense against potential missile threats from Pakistan or China. He said that the procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure".

we should actually try get the tech for these system and further our indegenous ABM projects. SO we should make sure we only get them with ToT. That will be tough.

and yeah, they will be bloody expensive. but its a matter of defending against nukes. so its justified expense

I think Iron Dome is made for short range missiles not for long range BM

This news article contains many mistakes. One cannot compare Iron Dome with PAD. They are completely different for different threats.

Iron Dome or David's Sling or Stunner missile system can be an effective medium range weapon against cruise missiles, air launched stand off missiles and short range rockets.

Yes, i know, but the tech for Iron Dome would be very advanced, since it has to detect and intercept even small-to-medium rockets. So this will increase the ability of our ABM defenes, giving a layered defence.

What we really need is Arrow 2 from Israel. Thats the real deal. hopefully Uncle Sam will ease the stand on export of Arrow 2

2010-11-17 Mr. Lova Drori, Executive Vice President of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has confirmed in an interview to India Defence that the Israeli defense major has offered two of its most advanced defensive weapon systems -- Iron Dome and David's Sling -- to the Indian Armed Forces.

"We have lot of products that would interest Indian armed forces and we are talking to them about that, but we can't share more specific details about those products or programs. All I can share is that we are offering Iron Dome and David's Sling to the Indian armed forces."

Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system in development by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. The system is being created as a defensive countermeasure to the rocket threat against Israel's civilian population on its northern and southern border, and is expected to be deployed by the first quarter of 2011. It is designed to intercept very short-range threats up to 40 kilometers in all-weather situations.

David's Sling, also sometimes called Magic Wand, is an Israel Defense Forces military system being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense contractor Raytheon, designed to intercept medium-to-long range rockets and slower-flying cruise missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah, fired at ranges from 40 km to 300 km

They are very costly

Might be, but very effective too. Israel is really leading when it comes to missile tech and it's really a shame that we didn't get more co-developments with them. However, I hope we get the licence production rights for these missiles, because we need them in high numbers to get an effective missile shield.
