As a result, onion price has almost doubled in the retail market. It is now up-to Tk 80 per kg in several Dhaka markets.
Benapole Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agent Association official Moshiur Rhman said the Indian government suddenly raised the price of per ton of onions to Tk 650 from Tk 450 on Aug 18 without any prior notice.
“Import through the Benapole port was remained closed on that day,” he added.
He said new consignments of onions were available on Monday with a new price tag. “But again it did not come on Tuesday,” he added.
The port official sees the move by Indian government as a strategy to prevent price hike of onion in their country.
