India has the largest youth population in the world; around 66 per cent of the total population (more than 808 million) is below the age of 35.
Nearly 40 per cent of the Indian population is aged 13 to 35 years (defined as youth in the National Youth Policy).
The median age in India in 2010 was just 25.2 years, compared to 34.5 years in China.
The Indian labour force is set to grow by over 8 million per annum over the coming decade, most of which will be driven by youth entering the labour market. This is a major challenge for policymakers in terms of creating decent work for the increasingly educated cohorts.

At nearly 119 million strong and growing 3.2 percent per year, China has the largest population of people above 65 years of age—a total 8.8 percentage of the total population, according to national census data.
The most populous country in the world, once known for an ample supply of low cost labor, entered a phase of population aging in 1999, says Li Jianguo, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress in his Aug. 24 report on “Law of the People’s Republic of China on Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly.”
The elderly population, at this rate, could touch one-sixth of the entire population by 2018, and one-fifth by 2025, according to Li Baoku, Chairman of China Aging Development Foundation (CADF), cited in the People’s Daily Overseas Edition.
