Kalpakkam Aug. 2: India can build its own nuclear powered aircraft carrier and warships, said the country’s top nuclear scientist.

“Yes, we have the capability and technical expertise to build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and war ships of global standards. When the government asks us to build such ships, we will do it,” Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, said on Sunday.

He was addressing reporters at the Propulsion Reactor Project (PRP) site at the Indira Gandhi Centre For Atomic Research (IGCAR), where INS Arihant, the country’s first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine took shape.

Disclosing that India has mastered the technology to build Light Water Reactors (LWR), Dr Kakodkar said, “INS Arihant is powered by a Light Water Reactor built by the scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). We have the capability to build big Light Water Reactors to meet the energy requirements of the country.”

The AEC chairman said that the kind of reactor built for the nuclear submarine could be used to electrify villages and remote areas not covered by the national grid. “We are not ruling out the possibilities of using such reactors for rural electrification. Though the cost of power production may be a bit expensive, we can always explore the possibilities for using this compact reactors for bringing light to the villages.”

Dr Kakodkar said the commissioning of the first reactor at Koodankulam had been delayed. “It will be ready for fuelling early next year. The 500 MW fast breeder reactor will be ready for commission by 2011.” Dr S Banerjee, director, Barc, said the LWR was more flexible than other reactors. “It can work 30 times faster than the conventional reactors. This will help the Navy personnel to manoeuvre the vessel to speeds of their requirement,” he said.

Regardless of the cost factor, it is really heartening to know that LWR technology has the prospect of lighting up our villages. For me, it is far more important than a nuclear powered warship.

I doff my hat to the Indian scientists. No praise is enough for them.

of course India can build nuclear warships ,nuclear subs require more nuclear tech, but india will take at least 10 years to have the first Nuclear AC,you already have two conventionally-powered AC under construction

Here are some excerpts from this exclusive interview recorded right inside the top secret facility in Kalpakkam on the coast of the Bay of Bengal.

Q: Was this completely made in India?

A: Yes.

Q: Designed, fabricated and executed in India?

A: Yes, that's right, by Indian industries.

Q: And by Indian scientists?

A: Yes

Q: At Vizag, the Prime Minister went out of the way and thanked the Russians, and the Russian ambassador was also present. What was the role of the Russians? India had leased a Russian nuclear submarine?

A: I would also like to thank our Russian colleagues they have played a very important role as consultants, they have a lot of experience in this so their consultancy has been of great help so that so that I think we should acknowledge.

Q: Consultancy for what?

A: For various things, as you go along when you are doing things for the first time with a consultant by your side you can do it more confidently and these are difficult time consuming challenges so you have to do this without too much of iterative steps and this helped in that.

Q: So this is not a Russian design?

A: It is an Indian design.

Q: Indian design, made in India, by Indians?

A: Yes, that's right.

Q: Is the noise level comparable to other submarines of this class, since that is a way of detecting submarines?

A: Yes, I think so. You have seen the inside and tell me if you felt some sound there?

Q: Compared to a power reactor the sound was minimal.

A: Compared to machinery running in any other places, did you hear much sound? I think this is very quiet system.

Technological development is necessary, but less should be spent on military and more to improve the quality of life of average citizens. When 40% of Indians earn $1 or less, I cannot really praise when that country wastes money on nuclear armaments. It does not bring prestige to India. In Bengali we say Gariber Ghora Rog or a poor man's indulgence in horse racing.

I think the latest feat by India will start a dangerous arms race in the Sub-continent.

Why, what's the use of powering them with nuclear power?

It's good that we improved our capablities that far, but that doesn't mean we have to put that tech in all new ships, without thinking about the high costs!
The only vessels that really need such a powerplant are SSBNs, bigger carriers and maybe battle cruiser. But as far as I know bigger carriers will not come before 2020 and do we need battle cruisers?
I agree with toxic_pus, it's more important to use such techs in the civil field, than for carriers and cruiser!

Actually India can't start an arms race, cause we already are in it since years(specially with Pakistan). The new developments (nuclear powered vessels, balistic missiles) are only answers to the egde that China has in these fields. So India don't start it new race, but tries to catch China up, which is important.

Most of the Nuclear Fuel which we are going to get will be used for Military Use not Civilian.

India cannot afford Nuclear Power (Electricity) in the scale which is shown by Media Reports.
