India has reached maturity of technology in realising its defence services requirements and it is necessary to exploit the potential of the private industry to increase the production rate, a top Defence Research and Development Organisation official said today.

“…we have been growing from nowhere. In the last two three decades we have reached the maturity to the international level, almost closer to the international level in terms of technology of aircraft, helicopters and missiles and Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV),” DRDO Director General (Aeronautical Systems) K Tamilmani told reporters here.

AeroIndia is an opportunity for India to showcase the strength in the Aeronautical field, he said briefing about the five-day aero show beginning here from February 18, which would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Make in India” is the theme of the 10th international edition of the aerospace and aviation exhibition.

He said “now engine technology is one thing we need to focus little more, remaining areas we have reached almost closer to where we need, what India needs to build with the technology available.”

With Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, technology is available for any product to be realised for the future for the Indian Defence Services, either Air force or Navy or Army, he said.

“On helicopter technology – LCA has given us great input to decide whatever type of helicopter we are doing — whether it is five tonne category or ten tonne category, India is capable of doing. All technologies are available including production technology,” he said.

Stating that Unmanned Aerial Vehicle has been a successful programme though started a little late, Tamilmani said “today all the technology required for the UAV programme is available.”

A bit misleading...or a lot...can he clarify that future Indian requirements (such as the MMRCA for AF) can be met by India alone or DRDO?

LCA.....Helicopter.....ten tonne? What is he saying or the editor typing?

BENGALURU: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on equipping the proposed Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) with fifth generation features like stealth and supercruise.

Speaking at a curtain raiser for the 10th Aero India seminar, K Tamilmani, distinguished scientist & director general (aeronautics) at DRDO, said they will also consider a more powerful engine for the aircraft as the existing one may not be able to power the plane’s advanced requirements.

He said the organisation would be developing different versions of the cruise missile Nirbhay, including a low-altitude launch version for the Navy.

DRDO is also looking to build a rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for the Navy which has applications like sea surveillance. This could also have civil applications like traffic management, he added. But the challenge in this project was to build smart systems that would enable the UAV to land on a moving ship.

A 20-member team is working on the project, which is expected to take off in the next 5-6 years, Tamilmani said. “We are going to launch in future a high-altitude UAV called HALE which will fly much longer,” he said. “With the technology generated through all these programmes I think India has now matured in terms of technology,” he said, adding that the DRDO was also looking at engaging the private sector.

Organisation Lost Over 200 Scientists

DRDO downplayed the recent exits from the organisation, including the removal of its chief Avinash Chander last month. Tamilmani said the opportunities in DRDO are as attractive as those in similar private firms, and that only 35 people left the organisation last year.

DRDO has over 7,500 scientists, and in the last few years, it has lost over 200 scientists in grade B and C, putting it under severe pressure to hire more people.

Su-30, LCA Simulators at Air show

Top officials of DRDO said there would be Su-30 (Sukhoi-30) simulators and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) simulators at their stalls in Aero India 2015. One of the LCA (MK-II) simulators would be for general public viewing while another LCA MKIII simulator will be reserved for pilots and VIPs visiting the stall.

DRDO Official: India Has Matured Technologically -The New Indian Express

I'm sure a certain amount of maturity in technology has been reached, whether it is at ISRO or DRDO. How that is leveraged is still to be seen.

When it comes to missile, on can say that DRDO has nearly mastered the art of building complex ballistic missile systems from scratch successfully.

Same can be said about other platforms.

Maybe the author is having a bad day & was writing the article while he was drunk

It means India now has the technology to create an equivalent plane to Rafale, but it is not feasible since it will take India the same time it took France, about 25 years by which time 5th generation aircrafts would be mainstay of every major air force and even 6th gen may have arrived.

I recall an article which stated India has already surpassed Sweden in aerospace industry and can look forward to surpassing all but US, China and Russia in a few decades.

No, India does not have technology to create equivalent aircraft to Rafale. You create the technology in the process. So yes, today it does not exist, since if it did, then they could put it together and make Rafale.

Don't be so stupid.
