Those data points are telling - Indians earn more, are better educated, believe more in hard work and personal fiances are far far better than american Chinese. I'll add another, they are not seditious like Chinese Americans are. Poor @gpit, maybe we can go and leave better tips for him next time  He is trying so hard to be american

India is a third world country. They are so poor that adults in India defecate in the streets. One of the worst things to happen to a human is to be born in India.

Don't get me even started on China.
Read some where you folks eat Human fetus which is considered a quite a delicacy in China.

WE ARE THE POOREST NATION IN THE WORLD!!!!!

PLEASE LEARN TO ACCEPT IT INDIANS!!!

But being poor is not the worst thing in the world. Great nations were built out of poverty and demise. Examples are all around us. The worst thing is that our leaders are more interested in building Ram Mandirs and securing seats for lower casts and using central funding as subsidies to win elections instead of building great Industrial complexes that will build a futuristic India.

Anyways emotions aside, India desperately needs an Industrial revolution to get out of this mess. Something to the same level of China. Atleast some educated leaders are trying to do it with projects like Industrial corridors. Hopefully red tape and corruption wont hinder them.

A) yes, but India also provide food less then 0.05 cent /kg to its poor people.

so while in China and US poor people spend more then $ to get one kg of rice in india they can get in few cents. Thats why would say we have more $$ thats why India is poor, but the fact is as per PPP india is far more ahead in times.

While new figures show that the number of those in extreme poverty around the world - surviving on 82 pence per day or less - has declined significantly, India now has a greater share of the world's poorest than it did thirty years ago. Then it was home to one fifth of the world's poorest people, but today it accounts for one-third - 400 million.

The study found the number of extremely poor people had declined from half the world's population in 1981 to one fifth in 2010, but voiced concern at its increase in Sub-Saharan Africa and continuing high level in India.

World Bank president Jim Yong Kim said while the overall decline was "remarkable progress", the remaining 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty was "a stain on our collective conscience." His colleague, World Bank chief economist Kaushik Basu, who until last year was economic advisor to Indian prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, said the figures called for the world's wealthier countries to do more.

"We have made strides in cutting down poverty, but with nearly one-fifth of the world population still below the poverty line, not enough. Directing investment towards the poor will require coordinated effort by the Bank, our country partners, and the international development community; and will, let's face it, entail sacrifice on the part of those who are fortunate enough to be better off," he said.

The scale of continuing extreme poverty in India, despite its economy nudging growth rates of nine per cent in recent years, highlights what government strategists have called its "ticking time bomb." Its population is expected to reach 1.5 billion and become the world's largest nation by 2026 but its economy is not growing fast enough to create the 20 million new jobs per year they will need to prevent poverty increasing further.

Its problems are compounded by poor health services, child malnutrition and inadequate education and training. Almost half of pupils drop out of school by the age of 13 and only one in ten people have received any form of job training.

The perception of India as a fast-growing economy however has seen developed countries significantly reduce their aid. The United States has announced a 16 per cent reduction while Britain has announced it will end its £280 million per year aid programme.

Thomas Chandy of Save The Children said 200 million people had been lifted from poverty in the last two decades but the recent economic growth had left one third of the population untouched. "India's status has gone down despite the economic growth, inequality has widened which makes the poor poorer. In child mortality, infant mortality and maternal mortality, India seems to have the largest populations in all these categories. We would like to see focused interventions [because] the most difficult areas remain untouched," he said.

@ChinaToday, thanks a lot for this article.
Altho not flattering to india at all, its supposedly the truth.
even thoh situation in villages are a lot better than wat it used be , say , 10 years ago.....today there is electricity instead of earthen lamps, small portable tractors instead of bullocks, metalled roads instead of kuchchha roads (which vanish during floods), high yield variety seeds and an actual increase in yield (quite substantial- about 400%), cable tv and mobile fones are everywhere, motorcycles instead of bicycles etc etc. things have improved for the ppl who have or had a hold on something like a job or a plot of land.
but what about the section of ppl who have nothing of the above ???? landless farmers, urban unskilled workers, or the families whose sole bread earner already dead (for some reason or the other)......
the article mentions that there had been overall decrease in the no. of poor ppl in the world as well as in india, but since the rate of decrease might have been more in the case of non-indians , the indians' share of the poverty rose.....to one third.
my point is that the poor in india got left out of the growth story. some pakistani or chinese brother mite get a kick out of terming our growth as a fluke or something by giving the above examples - persisting poverty , while very conveniently ignoring that the vast majority of ppl , in, both villages n urban areas, were touched and uplifted by the growth story.
so what are the ways that we can accommodate these less fortunate ones in the "growth train" ????
1. govt initiative
2. ppl initiative (govt alone cant work wonders if u refuse to work on ur part)

what are the hurdles ???
1. indifference of the ppl (blame it all to the govt and act as if "ganga nahaa liya "
2. high fertility among the downtrodden, "left out" ones. we (us indians ) often see that the hopelessly poor ppl are so full of hope that they reproduce with utter disdain to the rules of economics and their capacity to raise children. raat ko desi daroo peekar ghar aakar bachche paida karo (after an evening with country liquor, let the night be bz with making babies). illiteracy apart, these ppl - rickshawwallas, daily labourers, beggars, roadside vendors, thela wallahs etc etc, do not realize that a 15 rupee condom is much cheaper than giving birth to a baby, leave alone the raising.....
3. education

immediate steps to be taken --
RAISE EDUCATION and COMPULSORY FAMILY PLANNING sessions in rural areas and urban pockets where the poor ppl live.

and yes...in this case....fruckk diversity.....incorpoprate chinese model....dont let the religious sentiment fruckk with the development process.
