Ram Nath Kovind, the NDA candidate, was on Thursday elected as India’s 14th President receiving an overwhelming majority of votes from the country’s lawmakers.

Mr. Kovind defeated opposition’s Meira Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker, garnering more than 65 per cent of the votes in the Electoral College, the Returning Officer for the poll announced on Thursday.

The 71-year-old, who will be the second Dalit to hold the top constitutional position, received 2930 votes with a value of 702044, the returning officer, Anoop Mishra, said.

Mr. Kovind will be the first BJP member to be elected president.

Ms. Kumar, also a Dalit, polled in 1844 votes with a value of 367314.

The Electoral College comprises of Members of Parliament and members of legislative assemblies of all states.

A total of 4,896 voters — 4,120 MLAs and 776 elected MPs — were eligible to cast their ballot. MLCs of states with legislative council are not part of the electoral college.

While the value of an MLA’s vote depends on the population of his or her state, the value of an MP’s vote remains the same at 708.

The polling was marked by cross-voting in various states where many opposition members favoured Mr. Kovind.

The Vice-Presidential election will be held on August 5.

While BJP has nominated a former party president, Venkaiah Naidu, the opposition has fielded former West Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi.

I wanted Meira ji. Dignified lady.

Sadly backed by the wrong party in the current environment.

Cheers, Doc

.
Congratulations Mr. Kovind and BJP! Quite a few from the opposition cross voted. Next smooth sailing for Venkaiah Naidu as VP?

Does the President of India hold any real power? And if not, why do you have a Vice President as well? From my limited knowledge, the Prime Minister is holds the executive power

The Vice-President of India is also the Chairperson of the Upper House of the parliament.

I think..he will be a yes man for Modi. I would have preferred President to be drawn from non political back ground, someone like Abdul Kalam. MS Swaminathan would have been a great choice.

E Sridharan is the best choice .
MS Swaminathan has some Congress lineage.

Prime Minister is more powerful than President .Since he is the boss of ruiling government.
But President is the Commander in Chief .

President of India has certain power, but majorly his is a nominal position, However, in general election time, he has power on who will form next government when elections are hung.

Laws are made in Parliament and voted on. They go to the upper house which send back amendments Lower house votes again and if passed the upper house has the final vote before it is presented to the President who has to sign it into law.
He has the right the right to refuse and send it back to Parliament if he feels the Law violates the constitution , he can delay and query with reason certain aspects of the law.
When he signs, it becomes law.

Does the declaration of war by India against any country need the approval of the Rajya Sabha?

NO.
Declaring war against any country or ending such war doesn't require the approval of either house of the Parliament.

It is done by the President of India on the advice of the Union Council of Ministers which is headed by the Prime Minister.

But if a National Emergency (under Article 352 of the Constitution) is imposed following a declaration of war, it needs the approval of both the houses of Parliament within one month of such imposition.

MODI KI KATHPUTLI!

Look you initially started by establishing your credentials of being Indian with a couple of posts to try to establish yourself as Indian but the urge, the desire, the unquenchable thirst to be the person we ALL KNOW you are could not be resisted.
Only a craven fool, blindfolded with a propensity of self delusion would believe the flag you display as being anything but fake.
You cannot escape who you really are, even to delude others, because the urge is so insatiable.
Good luck son, but I will not be indulging those who have no courage to show their real antecedents. They are duplicitous cowards and engagement with them is an utter waste of time.
Reply if you must, Alas I will not.

You are talking to a person who was born in a state where Modi was born.

Any more question?
