India accounted for approximately half of the 27 people who died taking selfies in 2015, according to a Washington Post report.
NEW DELHI: The selfie craze doesn't seem to be dying anytime soon, but a lot of people are dying because of it. In fact, India led the world in selfie-related deaths in 2015, according toWashington Post.

Citing reports, the Washington Post says that India accounted for about half of the selfie-related deaths globally. The Post says at least 27 people across the world died taking selfies last year.

3 college students died in Kosikala, near Mathura, while trying to capture a self-portrait in front of a speeding train in January last year. In March, seven youths who were out celebrating a friend's birthdaydied when they their boat capsizedas they were attempting to take a selfie.

AJapanese tourist in Agra diedin September after he succumbed to head injuries from slipping on the Taj Mahal's stairs as he tried to take a selfie.


An engineering student in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu passed away when the rock he was standing on while taking a selfie cracked and plunged into a 60-foot ravine.Two more students passed away in Sundernagar, near Rajkot, by drowning in the Narmada canal while trying to take selfies.

Selfie-related deaths have continued in 2016 as well, withtwo people dyingnear the Bandra Worli Sea Link in Mumbai by drowning. Mumbai police then identified 16 'no-selfie zones' in the city to combat the menace.

Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident highlighting apathy to human life, two youths, who saw a woman fainting on the rail track on seeing an approaching train, failed to rush to her help, but instead took out their mobiles to capture the ghastly scene of the train ramming her.

The railway gatekeeper, who was in his cabin, waved the red flag to alert the engine driver as the woman fainted and fell on the track, but in vain and the train stopped only after hitting her.

The gatekeeper said the two youths, who were near the woman, instead of helping her, were keen on capturing the impending ghastly tragedy on their mobiles.

It's unfortunate that such incidents happen.
But everything has its pros and cons.
For every person who uses cellphone to click a selfie or uses it to take videos of ghastly incidents, there are many who use the cellphones in an emergency or to help others.

sure, there are people whose cell phone was used to arrange help for somebody but if we balance that by saying that lot more people keep gawking at incidents or record them on cell phone instead of offering help, we will see that the political and social culture can be changed.

a analogy is that in india it is thought by governments that "smart traffic management" means putting more computers to control traffic signals etc, but one really should be asking the simple political questions - why should there be so much traffic in the first place?? why so many private vehicles?? are the vehicle drivers actually needed on the road?? can't public transport be made efficient?? can't employment be made ?? are the construction-material-carrying lorries and vans intended for a actually useful building??

the problem with cell phones begins with the cell phone being a duplex machine ( simultaneous two-way communication ) and advertisements like "walk and talk" makes people immune to the troubles of others... you will have seen people yakking about ridiculous things on cell phone while walking carelessly on footpaths and roads and then there is the cinema hall yakker.

come on, i can't imagine fidel castro and elon musk to be cell phone yakkers.

lastly, even dprk now has cell phone and below picture depicts that global cell phone carelessness...

now the question we must ask is, whether a socialist ( therefore politically aware and socially streamlined ) society like dprk was always accident-prone and inefficient in accident cases before the time cell phones arrived??

i am not anti-computer and anti-technology.

i wrote a simple operating system ( the first in india ) in 2002, and was i not in the recent thread about the "blue origin" testing of their reusable rocket and capsule??

what i speak against is mindless consumer technology - cell phone, vid games, 4k television etc.

please note that i want every person to have a portable personal computer that has communication facility, but that communication should not be duplex voice and should have not radio communication inbuilt... communication can be provided by sockets within buses, trains, walls on roads and when in isolated areas by big external devices which can be connected to... simple, ya??
