Official records relating to the 2002 riots in India's Gujarat state were destroyed in line with regulations, the government tells a panel probing the riots.

Documents with records of telephone calls and the movements of officials during the riots were destroyed in 2007, five years after their origin

Officials say this is standard practice and in line with civil service rules.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in the riots.

The violence erupted after 60 Hindus died in a train fire. The cause of the blaze was never clearly established.

Hindu groups allege the fire was started by Muslim protesters, but an earlier inquiry said the blaze was an accident.

The Supreme Court set up a panel to investigate the riots in 2008, after allegations that the Gujarat government was doing little to bring those responsible to justice.

Government lawyer SB Vakil told the Nanavati panel probing the riots that some records relating to the riots had been destroyed according to the rules.

"As per general government rules, the telephone call records, vehicle logbook and the officers' movement diary are destroyed after a certain period," Mr Vakil was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

In April a senior police officer alleged in a sworn statement to India's Supreme Court that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi deliberately allowed anti-Muslim riots in the state.

Mr Modi has always denied any wrongdoing.

The Gujarat government has responded to the allegations by saying they have already testified before a special panel investigating the riots and will wait for the court's verdict.

The name India itself is a cover up. What would be in the papers that billahaider here doesn't know already?

This had to happen. In India even office files are not properly maintained. Controversial files will dissapear forever. Unless it is upgraded to classified above top secret.

@ Topic

790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed and 223 more people were reported missing.[4][5] 523 places of worship were damaged: 298 dargahs, 205 mosques, 17 temples, and 3 churches

Get your Facts right...., Causality was on both side. Both side suffer, both side killed each other. Some Muslim (Vote) lovers claim 2000 Muslim death, while some Hindu (Vote) lovers say 500+ Hindu death..

Lie, Its proved in front of law that it was done by some bad person (Who unfortunately was Muslim ) and many ppl have been prosecuted..

On 22 February 2011 a special court convicted 31 people for perpetrating the burning. Another 63 people, including the key accused, Maulvi Umarji, were acquitted by the special court. However the other prominent people to be accused Haji Billa and Rajjak Kurkur were convicted.[28] The court upheld that the incident had been a planned conspiracy, explicitly citing the "scientific evidence, statement of witnesses, circumstantial and documentary evidence," upholding the Nanavati report, and discrediting the Banerjee commission.[28] The special public prosecutor was satisfied with the verdict.[29]

The special court pronounced the death penalty for 11 of the convicted while the 20 others were awarded life sentences on 1 March.[30]

In the wake of the verdict the Indian government introduced tight security over much of Gujarat – this has involved 15,000 extra police being deployed

First step to lay back the forgettable past and carryon with our economic growth...even muslims in Gujarat has moved on and why should these files be there as a medium of remembering that horror... first time i think our carelessness has helped us for a good thing....

Pathetic BBC reporting. Nanavati Commision has proved without a shred of doubt that it was a premeditated attack on the Hindu pilgrim by fanatic mobs and secondly the exact number of casulaties is 750 Muslims and 310 Hindus, not thousands.

In April a senior police officer alleged in a sworn statement to India's Supreme Court that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi deliberately allowed anti-Muslim riots in the state.

The Hindu : Front Page : Sanjiv Bhatt forced me to sign false affidavit, says constable

That guy, the senior police officer, is a known criminal with criminal cases pending against himself.

The answer is here - Govt regulations.

"As per general government rules, the telephone call records, vehicle logbook and the officers' movement diary are destroyed after a certain period," Mr Vakil was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

Errr, before you guys jump to conclusions...... All government departments destroy files after 5 years unless they have been ordered to preserve them by the courts. That is why if you file an RTI for a 10 yr old file, your petition will be rejected. It's a general procedure.

With the amount of paper our government departments churn out, can you imagine the amount of storage space required if we had to preserve all files?

Surprise Surprise!
Actually not surprised at all.

You don't know what you are talking about. It is a Govt regulation that files are destroyed after certain years. Since the files were not asked for by the court, they were destroyed , as per procedure.

Its surprising/disgusting that the reporting standards of BBC is based on stereotypes and not on facts.
