What's new

India govt. in a 2002 speech promises to "make India a Developed Nation by 2020"; Only 13 days left in 2020, what is the progress of this plan?

how about some indicators that are more directly relevant to normal people's daily life?

life expectancy wise, India is performing WORSE than North Korea;

Literacy rate (adult) wise, India is also performing WORSE than North Korea

Children under five years who are stunted, India is still performing WORSE than North Korea

Hunger situation, India is only slightly better than North Korea. While Kim Jong-un could blame the UN sanction for the huger in his country, what is Modi's execuse for India's hunger situation as one of the WORST on the earth?

We have improved in all parameters you quoted. Last year, we improved life expectancy by 1 year.

can i request mods to pin this on the first page of the thread???

Since the 2000s, India has made remarkable progress in reducing absolute poverty. Between FY2011/12 and 2015, poverty declined from 21.6 to an estimated 13.4 percent at the international poverty line (2011 PPP $1.90 per person per day), continuing the historical trend of robust reduction in poverty.

We have reduced poverty to single digit way back 5 years ago. We are now in a process of providing housing, electricity, free medical to 550 million people, we provided 100illion gas connections and built 140 crow toilets. You can just worship dictator Xi.

But that is still China's level at 30years before; and below North Korea's level today.

North Korea's bad performance could be explained by the UN sanction. But what is the excuse for India's even worse performance?

Unlike many other Asian countries, India won independence by not wining a independence war,but it's colonizer decide to leave. After the colonizer leave, nothing changed compare with the colonial era.only put a dress of socalled "democory", lowest class is still lowest class, ruling class is still ruling class, and with the caste system, lowest classes lives even worse. high caste never see low caste as fellow citizen.
No wonder India today became the biggest joke of "democracy".

Unlike Pakistan and especially Bangladesh, India did not have to start from scratch industries-wise and infra-wise. The Brits had largely industrialized India for supplying their empire (labor was cheap) and Indians had access to forestry, agriculture, mining, railroads and road networks of India which Pakistan and Bangladesh had to build from scratch (except may be some railroad routes). Yet instead of leveraging these advantages, India fell behind or remained static because of the corruption and laziness of their administration.

There is also evidence of something worse that happened. The few corrupt oligarch industrialists who had been boot licking the Brits before 1945, now got a chance after independence to completely usurp power by dividing the spoils of the huge Indian market between themselves and siphon money overseas.

They (Tata, Bajaj, Hinduja et al) divvied up the licenses to produce basic goods/consumables for the large Indian market and completely stifled competition and any foreign entry into their market in cahoots with the govt. Indians did elect a pragmatic PM after 2000 (Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was a brilliant academician) who opened up the economy from the clutches of these corrupt industrialists and govt. servants but Indians were largely foolish enough to not appreciate what he was doing for them, including the uplift of the Indian working class and peace processes with China and Pakistan.

It is too bad, because he was greatly and universally admired for his pragmatic policies and economic achievements both at home and abroad.

Instead - Indians are now (again!) largely beholden to the Kool-Aid of completely uneducated nepotistic Hindu-extremist leaders (and their corrupt Industrialist cohorts financing their politics).

A large section of semi-educated gullible Indians now think that these crooks are their saviors.

Something that got worse is the participation of females in the labor force in India. Four out of five women are not working in India. Which means they remain uneducated, barefoot and pregnant. What happens when women depend on the income of a man to support themselves. More importantly, birthrate (fertility) goes up and maternal health of babies suffers, which are also borne out by stats. Look at Bangladesh (36.3%) and then look at India (20.5%). And Hindu extremists have the gall to say that Bangladeshis are breeding like rabbits. A shame...

No , lot more than 30 years. We have yet to consume gutter oil, plastic rice, snakebsoup etc. China is light years ahead.

It has been almost one year for India as a "DEVELOPED NATION". What is the feeling of our Indian friends for living and working in a developed nation? Please share and let us envy.

Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Independence Day Address 2002 says: Our aim is to free India from the curse of poverty and unemployment. It is to make India a Developed Nation by 2020.

Now that only 13 days left in 2020, may I know the progress of this promise?

Link to the India PM speech in 2002

What about 100 days promise of imran khan?

Speak of the devil. North Korea is back on top of India on the Global Hunger Index. So are the rest of South Asia… They did beaut Papau Nee Guinea by the skin of their teeth though. What a great accomplishment.

This is the stupidest cliche for a democracy. Do you have a "choice"? You "choose" whoever you are told to choose. Besides, do YOU really get to choose? You being one of 100 trillion (40% iliterate) Indians? Your vote is nothing. The masses are fed by the media, the media is bought by the parties who are owned by the wealthy and powerful.

heads chopped off or choked to death, choices for Indian voters, either way is fukced
