India is purchasing 22 Predator "B" drones from the US in order to fulfill an urgent demand from the navy. However, since the drones are strictly for reconnaissance, India is simultaneously developing on its own armed drones that can be used for surveillance as well as for precision strikes.

New Delhi (Sputnik): The Indian government has initiated the procurement of 22 naval surveillance drones from the US for approximately $2 billion. The decision comes five months after the purchase proposal was approved by the Trump administration.

"A request for Information (RFI) for Predator ‘B' Sea Guardian was issued to the US Office of Defense Cooperation on November 14 and the response is awaited," Subhash Bhamre, India's Minister of State for Defense informed the Parliament on Wednesday.

The Minister also informed that the deal does not involve the transfer of critical technology to India.

"Procurement of Predator ‘B' Sea Guardian is being progressed under Buy (Global) category and no transfer of technology is envisaged," Bhamre added.

US Considers Sale of Armed Drones; But Does India Really Need Them?
The MQ-9B Guardian UAV is a variant of the MQ-9 Reaper drone (also called the Predator B), but it replaces the Reaper's missiles with several radar platforms and is primarily meant for maritime search operations.

On October 18, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson clarified that the US was ready to share technology with India but would not part with some closely guarded defense technologies as it would hurt the country's competitive advantage.

The Indian Navy is in dire need of high-altitude, long-endurance drones that can be used for surveillance as well as for precision strikes in the Indian Ocean Region. However, the 22 UAVs offered by the US are non-lethal in nature and can fly non-stop for over 27 hours for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions only.

To fill this gap, India is developing its own drone "Rustom II."

"The development of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Rustom-II is an indigenous effort wherein the majority of sub-systems like airframe, landing gear, avionics systems, flight control systems and data link systems have been developed indigenously by various private industries," the Minister of State for Defense informed the Parliament.

However, the propulsion systems and sensor systems of the Rustom II are being imported which the state-owned labs have promised to develop on their own at a later stage.

Great.
Those drones will enable us to detect Pakistani and Chinese ships from hundreds of kilometres away.
A single MQ-9B drone can scan tens of thousands of square kilometres of sea in a day.

Uncalled for.

Can Indian HAL manage to workout something to arm these drones?
If the Us had intentions to let Indians arm there drones (if they could), wouldnt they have provided them with armed one's in the first place.

.
2bn dollars fr unarmed, isnt it too overpriced, lemoa offers no discount

Would usa even allow them to arm them. Foreign military equipment sales agreements sometimes have clauses tht prevent buyer from altering equipmemt

Keep detecting. And that's that. Your auqat starts and ends there.
Well given their naval ships accident rate who knows these drones could also be found banging into some docked naval ships.

That's what they are being bought for....they are not armed...yes these drones don't have the aukat, the work will be done by Kolkata class destroyers and Mig 29k...

They are not made in China my friend, they are made in USA and cost 2.5 times your JF17 and maybe 3 the cost of your old F16's so please these machines will be used for surveillance and SAR, because P8i are more important asset and these are cheap to operate....

USA will never share source code... one can tweak some hardwares on platforms which softwares can handle... but one cant add any hardware unless there is softwares to recognise... source code is needed which will never be shared.

Basically cheaper p-8is minus weapons.More numbers for greater sortie rate and flexible coverage ,but lesser sensors, far less detectable. Also capable of landing on carriers.

1. What is wrong with China made defence equipment?
2. Many Su 30 mkis lost by iaf due to its incompetence were not at all made by china
3. You are too dumb to understand but i will still explain Jf17 is homemade in collaboration with china so that the costs are minimized.
4. The value of money back in 80s-90s when f16s were purchased would be equal or greater than the current value of money for same amount as per time value of money concept, if u want predators price comparison ,make it with todays price of f 16 ,but oh how will u do that ,being an indian its mandatory to not use ur iq.

Lastly, how difference in equipments prices make a difference to their performances?
And lmao at price comparison coming form people whose country is purchasing Rafales at almost double the rate at which they were sold to qatar.

Indians regard Chinese made defense equipment as bad quality stuff. But India cannot even make those equipments. They just brag with US made weapons.

When you produce too much equipment there are some machines and spares that are bound to be either defective or damaged in the process, the quality of Swiss watches cannot be compared to 1000 fake Casio or even fake Rolex watches...
And about comparing predators cost to 1980's F16 is completely justified as you people won't be able to buy even half a squadron of planes costing $100 million a piece now.
I know what JF 17 is and how you make them in PAC kamra so refrain from such topics.
About SU 30 mki falling from the skies, it's always the spares, but soon Russians will transfer the Spare parts line to India and you will see the availability to rise from current 67% to 80% and keep it sensible my friend and I just read about PAF fighters Knocking off 10 Israeli jets on wiki, we are glad that we have Worthy enemy...
