New Delhi: India has strengthened its military power since the 1962 Sino-Indian war and is now fully capable of defending itself, Defence Minister A K Antony said on Thursday.

"Infrastructure in the northeast is not up to our satisfaction but it has improved a lot as compared to the past...India of 2012 is not India of that period.

We are now capable of defending every inch of our country," he told reporters on the sidelines of a Navy conference here.

He was replying to a question on India vis-a-vis China 50 years after the 1962 war in which India had suffered a humiliating defeat.

Antony said earlier India had not focussed on enhancing infrastructure in northeastern states but "now we have moved very fast. Now our infrastructure, assets and manpower have substantially improved compared to the past."

The Defence Minister said India will continue to build its infrastructure and provide best equipment to its armed forces while continuing to its dialogue with China on the border issue and maintaining cordial relations with it.

"On the one side, we are strengthening our capability in the border, on the other side, we have established a border management mechanism with China that is now functioning satisfactorily," he said.

On cyber security, Antony said though India is a "latecomer" in terms of putting up a mechanism in this regard, there was an overall coordination within the government and "we are confident of protecting our cyber assets."

"Even though we are a latecomer in putting a mechanism and network for strengthening our cyber security, now we are moving very fast," Antony said.

"Within the armed forces, they have a unified approach on the one side and each service is tasked to certain particular activities in area of cyber security. There is a coordinated effort and all agencies have to work together," he said.

Why does Anthony keep bleating the same thing over and over again?

I am beginning to think that the government is hiding something big and fishy which is why they keep asking him to repeat the same stuff after every few months.

What say? I mean the central government is currently the least I trust personally.

I am sure there are questions being raised quietly among government and upper circles which is why this sentence is repeated by Anthony after every few months. It simply shows that people aren't confident enough about the government and have no faith in it. Which is exactly the case.

Well i have faith in armed forces to defend our nation. New systems are coming, but are slow.

I guess even though military modernization is going a bit slow right now taking into consideration the large scale hardware purchases and inductions which are in the pipeline. Its actually a pretty positive vibe that I am getting that we are actually learning some lessons atleast from our past experiences.Pakistan not being a priority for us anymore at least the threat perception from the Western frontier having come down to its current level which is meager by any standards(Unless of course the Taliban takes control of the Pakistani Nuclear Arsenal) we should divert our resources more to our eastern front(Nefa.).Even though relationships with China are pretty warm and cordial we cannot rule out entirely any conflict with our Eastern neighbour which if ever occurs would be limited to a mere skirmish I guess (That's a very far fetched possibility I should clarify here). Our main concern at this point of time should be to beef our Naval and Air strike capabilities and possibly space based weapons such as ASAT and all that.

Why Indians remember that conflict so clearly, take it so seriously ? It a small conflict. Take it easy, no more war will happen again. Only talk can solve the problem.

It's important to learn from our mistakes.

This war is not a big topic in China. Its also one of Mao's mistake, now government considers Japan more seriously. Tibet only has 3 million people, it is not possible to against India there.

what do you mean ? We will go by our experience and not what somebody thinks of some other nation.. What is between japan and china is not our concern... but what we learnt from 1962 should never be forgotten.. :)

On otherhand- our COAS said- Pakistan Army is not capable to defend the nation alone-
Wondering if he meant without the support of GoP or Amrika-

We remember it because we were wrong and we were defeated and same possibilities exists today also given the indo China border dispute and economical , strategic competition. it doesn't matter if China has plans to attack India or not it has the capability to do so if it decides, so India needs to have ability to defend itself.

Given the experience, may be he meant Army alone is not sufficient, need support of PAF and PN!! ;)

One experience was bad enough. Better safe than sorry.
