ONGC's overseas arm, ONGC Videsh (OVL) holds stakes in a producing gas field — Block 06.1 in the Nam Con Son basin off Vietnam's south coast — in a joint venture with TNK-BP and state explorer PetroVietnam.

Block 127 and 128 were not successful finds so what else can be done with them.. India will keep exploring with Vietnam in other blocks..

As long as there are more blocks there is potential of finding oil. It was just one block, there are other companies that have found oil in the waters that belong to Vietnam, we just need to explore more.

Last time I heard the GOI was trying to force the company to stay on, despite no oil was found, for diplomatic reasons.

that's pretty much universal standard indian procedures, keep hang in there until they go broke! Their mentality is indoctrinated just like what they behave in forums, the last to leave is the winner!

Officials here said India would continue to remain engaged with Hanoi, viz. continuing operations and expansion of activity in the Nam Con Son basin that OVL was awarded as a goodwill gesture to India, which was allowed to sell part of the stake to other oil producers when it did not have enough foreign exchange to pay for all the three blocks.

The point is India will not face China. I would be surprised to see India escalating the situation. U.S will only work the nations up with rhetoric, thats all. Indians don't want to be left alone fending for themselves. Smart move indeed.
