India fears sudden change in Bangladesh

Prime Minister's comment on Bangladesh raises eyebrows

The branding of a quarter of Bangladesh's population as “anti-Indian” by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has raised diplomatic eyebrows here.

Former diplomats found it intriguing that during his interaction with editors here on Wednesday, Dr. Singh, who is usually very careful with his words, chose to conclude his generally positive remarks on Bangladesh by observing that “we must reckon that at least 25 per cent of the population of Bangladesh swears by the Jamiat-ul-Islami (sic) and they are very anti-Indian and they are in the clutches, many times of the ISI.”

They also took umbrage at his observations that followed — “the political landscape in Bangladesh can change anytime. We do not know what these terrorist elements, which have a hold on the Jamiat-e-Islami (sic) elements in Bangladesh, can be up to.”

“I do not agree that 25 per cent population of Bangladesh supports the Jamiat-e-Islami. If you look at the votes they had polled in the last elections, it does not reflect so, although they contested elections along with the right-wing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of Begum Khaleda Zia,” said a close observer of politics in Bangladesh.

Not proper: Veena Sikri

India's former High Commissioner in Dhaka Veena Sikri was more forthright. “I don't think it is proper to describe people of another country in this manner,” she said while contextualising the BNP's stand. “The BNP says the interests of Bangladesh are not served by India. Sheikh Hasina on the other hand seeks to promote friendship because she feels friendship with India is in Bangladesh's interest.”

On Dr. Singh's assertion that a quarter of the people of Bangladesh swore by the Jamiat, Ms. Sikri wondered where the figure had come from.

“One third of the votes go to the BNP and an equal number to the Awami League. Of the remaining 33 per cent, most of it is the floating vote that looks at issues independently. I don't think you can say that 25 per cent are anti-Indian. Does it mean most of BNP's voters feel that way? One can't categorise in this manner just as one can't do the same with the people of Pakistan. Regimes and institutions can be characterised like this, not the people.”

The influence of the ISI, which has been trying to regain its hold since the early days of an independent Bangladesh, was strong under earlier regimes. But institutions such as the Bangladesh Army or the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, unlike the Pakistani ones, are very sensitive to public opinion.

‘They want a better life’

“When during the days of the army-led Caretaker Government, they saw public opinion in favour of elections; they did a good job with them. Certainly there is a big effort by the ISI to get back their pre-partition influence. But the question is what do the people of Bangladesh want? They desire a better life and many of them see that happening by nurturing good ties with India,” said the veteran diplomat.

Wow, did he really say that?

What a ridiculous thing for Manmohan Singh to say...

Well a lot of ridiculous things are said all over the world like South China Sea is China's because of history!

And we know that much of the history of China is invented through unverifiable legends concocted to further the Han cultural arrogance. I have given the links in the Vietnam China thread.

If you had visited this Bangladesh sub forum more frequently, you would find that Manmohan Singh is wrong, since here 99% of BD posters are anti Indian. If this is the true representation of Bangladesh, then how is the statement ridiculous?

Seeing is believing, right?

See it all on PDF, in case you have not done so. Or you will miss the Boat!

LOL, I respond to the article posted by Munshi, and you label my ethnicity/race as being culturally arrogant?

Try to say something about the article perhaps.

No I am not calling your race arrogant.

It is a well established fact and there are many scholarly research on the issue and of which we already have had a lot of discussion!

MBI Munshi is an example of what MMS is saying!

Saudi money is playing a yeoman's part in helping Bangladesh understand the importance of the Caliphate!

Prime Minister of India

These comments are not mentioned in the PMO's press release.

India is Hindu holy land and there is no harm in Hindus preferring that country over its motherland.

There are lots of theory regarding increase of Muslim population all over the world. The main reason high reproductivity and 2nd is conversion. India is no different despite repeated riots and all, Muslim population increasing.

There is a lot of theory about the occassional brea down of law and order in India too, that these riots are instigated by foreign funded Muslims in order to get more recruits to their terrorist designs. But then, theories means nothing, such failures do not represent our system. A failure is a failure. And the proof of the pudding is in eating it, no matter what rubbish one believes in. Bangladesh kicking out its Hindus is a reality.

You dont know the difference between Communal and Fundamnetalist.

Jamaat is a islamic fundamentalist party with an agenda of Islamic laws and constitution. BJP in India is a communal party which incite hatred and violence against Muslim to gain votes. Jamat will never say a single word against non muslims.

Word play, the best friend of the dishonest. First you give them titles, and then using those titles to prove your point?

The brilliant record of BNP and Jamaat in their last term is there for all to see.

If the number of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in India over the years have reached 20 million (13% of Bangladesh's population), the number some of your countrymen claim, why not deport them in the first place? That's what other countries do. Forty years seems like an awfully long time.

There you go once again using twisting logic in your own ways to prove your outrageous claims. You see only what you want to see. No one here is anti india. We love India. If it wasn't for India, we wouldn't be able to enjoy Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif , Bipasha Basu, etc.
But we just don't like how our own govt is selling us out. We are happy that SHAKE Hasina has dismantled ULFA bases and did other work for India, but at the same time, the awami hooligans have increased in thousands. I believe majority of the posters here feel that our current govt prioritises india over bangladesh.

Answer is simple we think you as our brothers.... had this been taking place from other side of the border sure you can imagine what we would be doing....you are again missing the point its you who think us as ENEMY then why have your people in an enemy state ask your government and take them back...i again stress if you think us as a friend then we will not raise this issue at all
