Whether its floods, earthquakes, nukes, trade, arms or aid, Bharat will always oppose anything and everything that favors Pakistan. The latest battle is on allowing Pakistani textile duty-free into the EU.

However this time around, Bharat may find itself isolated in opposing trade concessions to Pakistan. The last three remaining countries that opposed the concessions for Pakistan were Peru and Vietnam Vietnam has withdrawn its objections and Peru is about ready to.

The EU plan unveiled last October said duty suspensions would affect about $1.27 billion (900 million Euros) worth of Pakistani exports to the EU. Pakistan could boost sales to the EU by 100 million euros. The plan would affect mainly textile but also ethanol exports.

The European parliamentary delegation throwing support behind Pakistan has urged the member countries of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to facilitate duty waiver for Pakistani products. The European Union’s plan, known as a unilateral waiver, needs WTO approval and depends on unanimous backing from the trade body’s 153 members.

As Bharat stands alone in opposing the tariff reductions on about 75 items–it will be under European and world pressure to drop its opposition. In the end Dlehi would look pretty stupid in opposing trade concessions which would help the flood victims of Pakistan. Cotton and textile account for about two-thirds of Pakistan’s exports, and the textile industry is the main driver of the economy.

The EU proposes to suspend duties temporarily on certain Pakistani goods to help the country recover from last summer’s devastating floods.Bharat tried to form and group and lead opposition–however after Vietnam and Peru declined to help Bharat, it will be standing all by itself. India might make a political conciliatory gesture by allowing Pakistan preferential trade with Europe.

Pakistan edges closer to EU duty waiver: diplomat

GENEVA: Pakistani textile makers edged closer on Thursday to boosting exports to Europe after one of its opponents withdrew its objections, the country’s ambassador said on Thursday.

But India, whose exporters compete with Pakistan for a share of the world’s largest market, still opposes an EU proposal to suspend duties temporarily on certain Pakistani goods to help the country recover from last summer’s devastating floods.

“Vietnam has approved the EU duty waiver today. We are one step closer,” Shahid Bashir, Pakistan’s ambassador to the World Trade Organization, told Reuters as he left a meeting that had considered the plan.

India has so far led opposition with support from Vietnam and Peru. Trade officials said it was likely Peru would also drop its reservations.

Relations between India and Pakistan have been thawing in recent months, leading diplomats from several countries to suggest India might make a political conciliatory gesture by allowing Pakistan preferential trade with Europe.

An original EU plan unveiled last October said duty suspensions – if approved unanimously by the WTO – would affect about 900 million euros ($1.27 billion) worth of Pakistani exports to the EU and estimated Pakistan could boost sales to the EU by 100 million euros. The plan would affect mainly textile but also ethanol exports.

I think there were several countries that were opposing this waver including BD.

The duty waver to exporters won't help flood victims.

EU should pay for the flood victims from its own pocket, not from other exporting countries.

lol

this is not the first time they are failing

they should understand everyone is not like puppet france

funny thread.....the waiver requires "unanimous" decision.....so even if India alone is against it...it will not happen so you actually have to try to convince India rather than gloat about one nation backing off....no wonder you guys suck at diplomacy.....coz that is required for India to do is just oppose the waiver irrespective of any country withdrawing

Main source of pressure on the EU is the United States.

P.S. Kitna duplicate maarte ho yar? Poora thread bhar diya hai !

do you think country in EU going to buy entire textile demand from pakistan..
after all these duties are part of their revenues to fund development in their own countries..
but by duty waiver for Pakistan EU has actually let themself off to the obligation of paying pakistan in cash for flood victims ..

No problem for India.

Pakistan textile industry already lost thousands of jobs to china with free duties. So how can Pakistan offer cheap products to EU with a bad textile industry?

.
^^ bad textile industry plus shortage of electricity- Increase in demand will require increase in production- which in present economic and electric situation seems not possible-

Yes but China etc, already acieved economies of scale, they sell million of items to USA, EU, Pakistan and the world. Can Pakistan recover the brused textile industry and still make it 20% cheaper then China? hmmm
