India faces threat from within, not from China or Pakistan: Farooq Abdullah

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday warned that India faces threat not from the outside but from within.

“India does not face any threat from the outside. China, Pakistan cannot do any damage; someone within the country is hell bent on spoiling everything,” the National Conference leader said.

Without naming anyone, Abdullah hit out and said, “You talk about uniting the country but it is you who is creating an atmosphere of division.”

He further said the Kashmiris chose India over Pakistan during Partition because India guarantees equality.

“We could have easily gone with Pakistan in 1947 but we decided to stay with India where everyone is treated equal. I say it with pride that I am an Indian Muslim,” Abdullah said.

His remarks came after the Centre said that a “larger debate” was needed on Article 35A that allows the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to define the state’s permanent residents.

Abdullah has warned that a “far greater revolt” than the 2008 Amarnath land agitation would break out if the Article 35A is tinkered with.

If any such thing happens, the government of India will be squarely responsible for that, he had warned.

He had hit out at the Centre and called the move a BJP-RSS conspiracy to erode the state’s special status for demographic change.

The Supreme Court had last month asked the Centre to file a reply within three weeks to a writ petition filed by an NGO seeking that Article 35A be struck down.

The PIL said the state government, under the guise of Article 35A and Article 370, which grants special autonomous status to the state, has been discriminating against non-residents who are debarred from buying properties, getting a government job or voting in the local elections.

Article 35A was added to the Constitution by a presidential order in 1954.

Article 370 grants special status to J&K, while Article 35A, added to the Indian Constitution through a presidential order, empowers the J&K legislature to define the states "permanent residents" and their special rights and privileges.
