India emerging as a major military power

one hand India is evolving as a great super power in many fields of interests and on other hand its huge population makes it hard to fight against poverty and illiteracy, though the figures have improved quiter

It has to be tough to be a Pakistani..
For years... They were the apple of the eye of America.. Had their egos swollen by the aid and the Taliban experiment.. and they could laugh at India's social growth.. but then something changed.
India got on a different path while Pakistan is still stuck in 80's ..and they resent the change..The dog they fed has started biting them and all they could do is burn with jealousy

Pakistan has got great potential but most of the it has been ruined by its own politicians and they fail to deliver the amount allocated in budget, corruption . I guess the world is changing a lot. Soon v ll see pakistan shining and it will remove all the bad image on her :)

a few weeks ago the Indian army chief was complaining he didnt have any ammo?? or was it just a couple of days worth

imo to be a great military power you have to produce most of your weapons yourself. At times of war if you are reliant on third party suppliers they can dictate to you

India will possibly fight a war only with Pakistan and China, For Pakistan, India had enough ammunition! For China, Don't worry we will get the ammunition without we asking!

Mate I agree with a little of what you state but the bottom line is that poverty and incredible, shining and military power dont really go well together

and before you say living in glass house I have not said we are incredible shining or a military power

May I ask you a question? India has a population of around 1.2 billion, Even if India's 1 Billion live under poverty and if the remaining 0.2 Billion is super rich provide funds to increase India's defense budget by 15% year on year, What the wrong with that?

I find that this is going very well without a problem? What is your concern?

India is poor country, hence we can not afford to spend in GDP percentage as much as Pakistan or in absolute terms as much as China, both countries have missiles that can hit any part of India and have close strategic military cooperation.

Hence it is a genuine and cost effective step from India's side to have a missile that can hit all parts of china and work as a deterrence so that we don't have to spend excessive amounts on conventional arms to match china conventionally. We would rather use the money for alleviation of poverty and meeting our development goals.

While we understand the genuine concern of pakistanis and chinese on poverty alleviation, let me assure my chinese and pakistani brothers that we are in complete solidarity with you on these concerns and will continue to work hand in hand on these issues.

A heartfelt thank you, you inspire us.

Ten years from now the average Indian will be twice as rich as the average Pakistani and this gap is only going to widen in the decades and years to come.
India is racing toward economic and social advancement. Its population is becoming richer, more literate, more tech-savvy. And why is this happening? Because China’s awesome economic growth scares the living daylights out of India and this ensures that Indians are fixated by their economic growth in turn. Our former rival has put on running shoes and barely has enough time to check its rear view mirror to look at us, so focused is it on the Chinese panda.

Pakistan vs India: the widening gap – The Express Tribune

so Indis's poor is increasing and people are becoming rich while pakistan's poor are increasing year by year..

Love it....
Let them talk about our Poverty and ignore theirs and let them ridicule about our Missile, space, technology and science acheivement while they ignore theirs...

We are sending probe to mars next year but still pakistanis cant send a satallite to space  when both gained independence at same time

Our poors are decreasing and their are increasing....

Go ahead pakistanis, spend your time critisizing India

Indian military budget is only 2% of its GDP. it has lifted 300 million into middle classes HENCE the massive INTERNAL GDP growth last 20 years.

IF anything Pakistan and others including USA could take a leaf out of india,s book and STOP spending 5 or 6% of their GDP

You dont grow a GDP of $2 trillion without MASSIVE INVESTMENT into your economy.

AGAIN a lessson that others in SOUTH ASIA could look and learn from.

Do you not understand English. I just tried to explain to you we know all that and do not pretend we are shinning or incredible or secular etc etc. The terms that you lot choose to use for India do not sit well with ground realities. The first thing I thought mate no offence when I heard that India had spent $300 million on a missile was not well done but god how many people will sleep hungry tonight that good have been fed

Ah! India can spend $3000 million for the missile, We DO NOT care about who is hungry tonight! what is your problem here?

Ok fine you are a great shining incredible and emerging military power that has hundreds of millions sleeping hungry every night.

does not quite fit but hey if you guys are happy good luck with it

Thank you!

So here after you will NOT speak about Indian Poverty right?

Of course India is poor....even poor African countries do better than India.
Yes India is Poor but still we are comparatively alot better then Pakistan in term of Economy....that is the main reason why your Govt is so much interested in increasing trade with India.....and above all that our Economy is on the right track....

poverty index of developing countries is calculated based on

1: Probability at birth of not surviving to age 40 (times 100)
2: Adult illiteracy rate
3: Unweighted average of population without sustainable access to an improved water source and children under weight for age...

One cannot confuse this with OECD and Developed countries

Sorry, $2 per day is not real middle class.

If you really had 300 million new middle class, it would show in car sales, etc...

They derailed the thread....lets not discuss India's economy in this thread

Oh my! I never knew Surya actually existed because government authorities deny it. What surprises me is how did the writer come to know of the range of a ballistic missiles that doesn't even exist. Although Agni-V is not the end as DRDO and government has mentioned, we don't need to have ballistic missiles beyond 8,000 Km max (reducing payload increases strike range automatically)... as of now.

The writer is right in a way that we're interested to have a bigger role in the region (if not the world) but horribly wrong about intended targets.

US Navy operates in the IOR which is way below our area of interest or influence: beyond the level of Madagascar or even Diego Garcia for that matter. We got no problem with that. As long as the significant part of the Indian Ocean stays under our thumb, which thanks to US would indeed happen so, we don't mind anybody there. IOR is a massive area and we cannot simply own the entire ocean. Lots of international trade passes from there and therefore it should be allowed.

Dude, forget it. The West will turn a blind eye because they know India's focus is on China and they can sell weapons to India to cash in on that fixation.

The west has not been a threat to us so why should we be against them? Simple question. :what:

As for any future danger, the US can still obliterate India's capability if the need be. India has a LONG way to go before it gets anywhere in the same league as Russia or China.

You over-estimate your new master a little too much. Hiding its problems and showing only success gives it the false illusion of invincibility and perfection... which is fine as a policy but when it starts to overtake reality, it becomes dangerous to ones own senses.

so Indis's poor is increasing and people are becoming rich while pakistan's poor are increasing year by year..

Let them talk about our Poverty and ignore theirs and let them ridicule about our Missile, space, technology and science acheivement while they ignore theirs...

That's all they can do riding on the back of their new master. So relax.

Gaining independence at the same time doesn't mean squat. One needs sensibility and rationale to go and achieve the big stuff. We had ample of it despite foolish political leaders.

one hand India is evolving as a great super power in many fields of interests and on other hand its huge population makes it hard to fight against poverty and illiteracy, though the figures have improved quiter

Well we are having around more than 500 million people in middle class if you include all sub-strata of middle class. That's a big lot. There are 250 million poor indeed but that is based on the way west calculates its poverty rate. However things aren't that way here While metropolitan cities are unforgivingly expensive and match that of big cities worldwide in terms of cost of living, the small towns and smaller cities are still much more cost effective with cheaper and easier manageable way of life. My home city is almost one fourth cheaper than a major city like Bangalore or Delhi or Chennai and we have almost no power shortage :)

Life is not consumerist here but we have enough to live peacefully and be in touch with day to day modern developments We're working to reduce poverty and it may take some time. But we will reach the goal. After all, having more poor than many West European countries' total population is not easy.

But we need technology to defend ourselves from threats and that's why both defense and development go hand in hand.

Я надеюсь, что Вы понимаете. :)

Sorry, $2 per day is not real middle class.

If you really had 300 million new middle class, it would show in car sales, etc...

Western methods of calculating really aren't accurate in our context. And least of all, you lot jumping up and down by their set standards..:coffee:
