India dumps Iran, squeezes Obama

Awesome diplomacy by Indian diplomats.. Iran will stay happy that unlike other US friends, India will not significantly cut down its oil imports (11-15% is no big deal considering the kind of pressure west is bringing about).. USA will be able to show Indian (traditionally a non allied country) backing in principle, its sanctions on Iran.. Who said you cant have your cake and eat it too ;)

.
The Barack Obama administration will be delighted that the sustained diplomatic and political pressure on India is finally bearing fruit. Tehran, on the other hand, will view this as the unkindest cut of all the blows that New Delhi has inflicted on it over the past five year. Meanwhile, a protagonist lurking in the shade is all excited - Saudi Arabia

India is under tremendous pressure to reduce oil imports no doubt about that, but the actual reductions are caused due to financial constraints. Not exactly due to direct pressure.

A lot of countries are against Iran's nuclear program and the only way other than war is economic sanctions or isolation.

No pal, be big enough to say what this is. Financial constraints are not an issue. India HAS,for very good reasons, bowed to pressure but so what? Like I said on P1 this is only pragmatic. It would be more foolish for India to stick to its guns only to face fierce US backlash that sets back India economically/developmentally. India knows what side its bread is buttered, there is no shame in choosing development of your people in this case, govt of Iran has got themselves into this position why should India stick up for their inflexibility and irrational behaviour?

Must appreciate some US diplomats looking at the reductions positively - though the reductions are purely commercial/ financial in nature.

Nothing is what you paint it to be,

1. India does have reasons why its against Iran's nuke program,
2. It is becoming very difficult for India to transfer payments to Iran. All options are closed.
3. Shipping of oil is becoming difficult, as most shippers are refusing to carry Iran crude.

.
that's the way things move

1. on one hand Hillary can declare she made India reduce oil imports.

2. Iran is enhancing its bilateral trade on multidimensional areas

India in one eye standing with both sides but is action actually just maintaining its national interest nice.

India and Iran strengthen ties

16.05.2012

On Monday, Iran and India chose to deepen ties and the extension of cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

During a telephone conversation between Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, noting their mutual existing capacities, both sides stressed the need for full extension of bilateral relations and increased cooperation between Tehran - New Delhi in various fields.

Ahmadinejad highlighted the deep relationships, friendship, and brotherhood between the two nations and then noted that "Undoubtedly, through closer bilateral cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi, good progress in relations will be attained."

He similarly argued that raising the level of ties and promoting bilateral cooperation will help both countries to establish sustainable peace and security at the regional and global levels.

In this regard, he expressed his hope that through increased contacts and consultations between authorities, the level of joint relations will rise in different fields of science, technology, commerce, economics and energy.

Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister said that New Delhi called for cementing its ties with Tehran, as he said, "There are numerous areas in different economic, commercial, and technological sectors, as well as scientific cooperation for both countries.

It is recalled that bilateral trade between Tehran and New Delhi is estimated at 13.6 billion dollars. Also, 12% of India's imported oil comes from the South Asian country Iran.

We have decreased out oil dependence on Iran by 11% which keeps the US & EU happy (biggest trading partners and investors) and haven't left Iran in the dark as other opportunities are explored to strengthen that relationship.Iran is a diplomatic test for GoI and the government is trying really hard to maintain that balance

India considers wheat exports to sanctions-hit Iran

NEW DELHI: India is considering wheat exports to Iran, a government source said on Friday, as New Delhi hopes to boost exports to the sanctions-hit nation to help settle part of its oil imports bill through a bilateral mechanism.

An Iranian trade delegation will come to India next week to discuss wheat exports, the source added, without elaborating on the likely payment mechanism for sales to Iran.

Food shipments are not targeted under Western sanctions, but Iranian companies have been cut off from much of the global banking system because of the financial measures against Tehran, making payments difficult and discouraging traders.

Tighter sanctions are targeting Iran’s oil trade and central bank to pressure Tehran to shut down its nuclear programme, which Iran says is for peaceful purposes.

Asked whether the government would export wheat to Iran, the government source told reporters: “That is under consideration.”

India, one of Iran’s largest oil clients, aims to cut the trade imbalance which is currently tilted towards Tehran.

Exports from the South Asian nation accounted for about $2.8 billion versus imports of about $11 billion in 2010/11, according to government data.

India earlier this year decided to try to settle 45 per cent of its oil trade with Tehran in the rupee – which is not globally traded – by settling payment for Indian exporters without the involvement of foreign banks.

New Rial-Rupee mechanism to settle India-Iran payment issues
NEW DELHI: India today said a new rial- -rupee payment arrangement has been put in place for bilateral trade with Iran.

The problem with Iran began after the Reserve Bank of India, in December 2010, withdrew the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) mechanism under which payments were made to Iran.

"Rial-rupee payment arrangement have been put in place for bilateral trade between India and Iran," Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

He was replying to a query on whether India has taken steps to help its exporters sending consignments to Iran.

Iran imports goods like textiles and agricultural products from India which relies on Tehran for 12 per cent of its total crude oil imports.

Scindia replied in the positive to a query on whether India continues to export goods to Iran inspite of US and Euro zone sanctions.

"India exports goods to Iran in accordance with its international obligations of United Nations sanctions on Iran," Scindia said.

On proposed implications of these sanctions, he said they have the "potential to disrupt India's trade with Iran".

Washington has been urging India to cut its oil import from Iran for a waiver from US sanctions.

To another query, Scindia said All India Rice Exporters Association members had informed they were facing problems in receiving payments for shipments of rice made to Iran.

The overdue amount was reported to be about Rs 200 crore, he said, adding the Indian embassy in Iran has taken up the matter with respective Government authorities in Iran for getting the payments cleared.

"As per available information, the defaulters are Iranian private companies and not government entities," Scindia added.
^ We wont go through all this just to dump Iran :tsk:

P.S - Even though Iran had supported Pakistan in the past vis-a-vis India and Pakista ,but we are still willing to go ahead with this relationship because it mutually beneficial to both India and Iran.

Govt offers tax breaks on Iran exports

(Reuters) - The union government will offer tax incentives to exporters for sales in rupees to Iran, in the latest effort by New Delhi to bolster exports in return for oil from the Islamic Republic squeezed by Western sanctions, a finance ministry official said.

Following U.S. and European Union sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear programme, New Delhi is under pressure to cut oil imports from its second-biggest supplier, which provides about 12 percent of its oil needs.

India has publicly taken a stand alongside other rapidly emerging countries, including China and Brazil, that it would follow only U.N. sanctions, a position criticized by conservatives in Washington.

To skirt the sanctions, India this year decided to buy oil through a mechanism that lets refiners deposit rupees, which are not freely traded on global markets, for about 45 percent of Iranian crude purchases in an account at UCO Bank.

India sent a trade delegation in March to Iran to boost merchandise exports as a way of securing oil in return. But the delegation came back empty handed, and Indian exporters have complained of difficulties in trading through the new mechanism.

In response, the finance ministry will now offer tax incentives in the range of 4-12 percent of the value of products to exporters for sales to Iran in rupees. That brings them on a level playing field with exports sold in freely convertible currencies, such as the dollar.

"The benefits under the duty drawback scheme would be available to exporters under rupee trade with Iran also," S.K. Goel, chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), under the ministry of finance, said on Wednesday.

The government reimburses the payment of local taxes to exporters including customs and excise duty on goods either bought domestically or imported, which are used to make about 4,000 export items, from food products, textiles to auto parts.

That reimbursement generally excludes exports paid for in rupees, but the government will now exempt trade with Iran from that rule.

"Tax officials were not so far accepting our claims for incentives under Indian currency trade with Iran. Now it has been clarified and people are satisfied," M. Rafeeq Ahmed, president of the Federation of Indian Exporters (FIEO), a quasi-government body under the trade ministry, told Reuters.

Ahmed said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is close to approving a demand from exporters to allow advance payments from Iran in rupees under the new mechanism, as a way of reducing the threat of volatility in commodity prices and falls in the Iranian rial currency.

"The RBI is okay with it, I think the issue will be soon resolved," he said.

The latest incentives follow Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's proposal, in the annual budget last month, to exempt payments in rupees for oil imports from Iran from hefty local taxes from the 2012/13 fiscal year that began on April 1.

India and Iran plan to increase their annual bilateral trade by more than 60 percent to $25 billion by 2015. Indian exports to Iran currently total about $2.7 billion a year, with oil imports making up most of the difference.

"If all the incentive issues are resolved, India-Iran trade in rupees can touch $5 billion in next two years," Ahmed said.

Indian exporters received tax incentives worth around $11.6 billion under various schemes in the last fiscal year, including nearly $2 billion under the duty drawback scheme.

It is good to see that some Indians recognise facts

Its not American diplomats. The author of the article is a former Indian diplomat. Oh and he is saying that India bowed to American pressure

have you read the article i have posted ? and please don't spread the negativity in the forum as you always do.

Of course what I say is negative cos I do not buy into your India is shining and incredible. You coming on here a Pakistani site to hear positive things about India is foolish I would say

Well you will forgive me if I take the word of a former Indian Ambassador and diplomat when he says India has bowed to American diktat rather than your assertions

You are no friend of mine Indian. Please keep to topic which effectively states that Indian are bowing to white man
I guess you do not know the difference between accepting some thing and bowing down, there are a lot of things India has to look at from every angle. Your cheap, hatred filled comments do not qualify your analysis on matters and are aimed at stoking jingoism. If that is the gist of your argument from the article then you are trolling rather than dicussing the topic at hand.. Stop giving advice when you are just being an a** yourself.

I am viewing the whole issue in totality not only by the article you posted. Fact is this, there is tremendous pressure by US, India also wants Iran nuke issue to be discussed and resolved, India is finding it increasingly difficult to transact with Iran due to embargoes and sanctions, shipping of oil is taking a hit, the US is circumspect about India's oil reduction, Iran is proving to be a sore point between India and US, India is not reducing oil imports dramatically as well as not objecting to US calls on reduction. India has major investments in Iran to be worried about. India considers Iran a friend but is not emotional to consider world concerns about Iran.

.
International diplomacy is not a game of emotions - unless off-course if it is happening in Pakistan.

America can threaten a lot of Indian interests without India being able to do anything about it. So instead of being egoistic it is only logical to bow where you cant stand...India is paying hard cash and will find oil from many alternate sources. The Iranians will continue to squeal as usual.
