Nearly 70% of global oil demand growth between 2010 and 2040 is projected to come from emerging economies, of which the two largest are China and India. Demand growth from these two countries alone is greater than combined demand growth from the rest of the world.

Now India has passed Japan to become the world’s third largest oil importer behind the United States and China. Not only that, India’s oil use rose by 300,000 barrels a day in April, putting the South Asian country in position to surpass China’s estimated demand growth in 2015 of 295,000 barrels a day.

More of India’s oil is coming from the Middle East as well. Iran shipped 160,000 barrels a day to India in the first four months of this year, and Iraq shipped an average of 555,000 barrels a day in the same period. Saudi Arabian exports to India totaled about 795,000 barrels a day in the January through April period.

These three countries account for more than a third of India’s projected 2015 oil consumption total of 4.1 million barrels a day. Japan’s total for the year is now estimated at 3.8 million barrels a day.

India and Japan have routinely traded the third and fourth spot in the global oil import rankings over the past few years, according to a report at Oilprice.com. India, however, is destined to take the lead for good, not just because its population is so much larger than Japan’s, but also because Japanese demand for crude will slow once the country gets its nuclear power generation fleet operating again.

India also is expanding its refining capacity to meet demand for more motor fuels as the country’s growth climbs at an annual rate of 7% and new car sales rise even faster. The world’s largest oil refinery at Jamnagar is getting a capacity increase that will raise its total capacity to more than 1.5 million barrels a day, still less than a quarter of the expected demand for 6.2 million barrels of fuel daily by the end of the decade.

oh great, now we are going to have even more negative balance of payment and even weaker currency.

. .
India also going to overtake japan on steel production by 2016

Good. This will see India investing more in Africa and Central Asia. Perhaps this can also have a stabilizing effect on the Middle East. We're being spoiled. First we had the privilege to watch China's rapid rise. Now India's. Let's hope the both don't clash.

This is getting really scary. So much dependence on import to sustain our growth will have it's own repercussions.

GOI should holistic approach and develope electrified freight corridors at earnest. Nuclear and renewable sources are the only way to cut back the import.

.
Lets start with the negatives
- Trade deficit increases
- Supply blockade in case of hostilities

Positives
- Greater trade
- Greater leverage in international negotiation
- Increased integration with world economy

. .
That means, till now, the tiny sized island country of Japan used to consume more oil than India ?
Damn.. we have to get rid of this fossil fuel, ASAP.

Third largest importer of Oil.

Is it an achievement one should be proud of?

Just being curious ...

You should do all. Thinking a nation like India or China, with about 1.3 billion people each, can rely purely on domestic energy is wishful thinking. But hey, this is good. You two giants import many raw materials and fuel from other countries, most of which are poor. If that money is spent on infrastructure, education etc, those nations become wealthier too, and import Indian and Chinese goods. Look at what's happening to Africa for example, or Central Asia. It's a win win. That doesn't mean that India and China shouldn't pursue renewables and nuclear energy of course.

Oh yes. It's beautiful really. Ever since the year 2000, or the late nineties, every single headline was about how China was becoming the biggest in this, the biggest in that, the fastest growth etc. Now you guys will generate those headlines. So be proud. And China will still be growing, so let's hope for a friendly rivalry.

Right, didn't see any flags, thought you were Indian. Heck, if Pakistan can get it's act together and later on also normalize relations with India, you'll be booming too and importing lots of oil. 200 million people is no joke.

That poster hates anything related to India. They don't realise Pakistan borders a future potential economic behemoth nextdoor.... Already 9th largest and poised to be 5th largest by 2020.
PS: Really glad that Indo-Iranian trade is booming thanks to the news of lifting of sanctions.
