NEW DELHI: Worried about China's reaction, India is developing cold feet on a new outreach dialogue with Japan and the US. Though Beijing hasn't yet registered any official objection to the dialogue, Indian rethink is more in the nature of preempting a Chinese reaction.

In April, India had, at the instance of Japan, announced a new dialogue on "regional and global issues of shared interests" among New Delhi, Tokyo and Washington. The dialogue would cover hot-button issues of South China Sea and other matters in Asia-Pacific, all of which are important for India. The new trilateral talks were announced by former foreign secretary Nirupama Rao in Tokyo. The first "trialogue" was supposed to coincide with the new ministerial-level economic dialogue - also between Japan and India - slated for early October.

The talks are part of a big push by the foreign ministry to counter the growing Chinese influence in India's neighbourhood. The Indo-Japan relationship has acquired greater importance in recent years. India and Japan had signed a rare security agreement in 2008 - an accord that Japan has with only two other countries in the world. Despite Japan's intransigence on many nuclear issues, India is keen to ramp up its relations with Japan.

But some parts in Indian security establishment remain concerned about how the Chinese would view this initiative. Earlier, China had objected to a prospective "quadrilateral" among the US, India, Japan and Australia, which killed that initiative after Washington developed a cold feet. Later, India's defence establishment objected to multi-nation naval exercises like Malabar. This year, the Malabar exercises would have been a US-India-Japan exercise off Japan, but Tokyo had to pull out after the Fukushima disaster. Defence minister A K Antony has suggested that such exercises should be bilateral, and not multi-lateral.

During last week's visit to Beijing by US vice-president Joe Biden, the message from Xi Jinping, the next president of China, was that Beijing and Washington should "continue" their dialogue on Asia-Pacific. China and the US already have a dialogue on South Asia, just as the US and India conduct a dialogue on East Asia.

For India to back away from the trilateral talks at this stage, said senior government sources, would indicate to the region that India is not yet ready to play the big game.

India's growing ties with Japan is watched carefully by other China's neighbours like Vietnam, South Korea etc. All these countries have deep ties with China, yet all of them are part of a massive hedging game that is underway in Asia. A fast-growing China has also displayed the kind of aggression that has unsettled its neighbours. In India's own neighbourhood, China's relationship with Pakistan has become a security threat to New Delhi. No wonder, India's outreach in China's eastern neighbourhood has been crafted to send the message that India is taking a strategic view in the region.

If this is true, then India really needs to get rid of the Congress party.

How can you get cold feet on a matter of national interest, just because another neighbour "might" complain about it? And even if they do complain about it, you can always tell them to stuff it.

You are right about this. This tie will do more good financially to India rather than militarily. We need this tie-up.

Firstly complete and utter BS, the GOVT is likely to remain in power till next elections. And why should they leave? What alternative is there? The BJP?? they are just as useless or gave you forgotten their last terms? And why the F**K should MMS be a casualty for something that he hasn't been involved in. Throughout his adult life MMS has dedicated every breathing moment to his country and is responsible for the current prosperity and elevating MILLIONS from poverty and many MILLIONS more in the future. TWO WEEKS after undergoing MAJOR CARDIAC surgery je returned to work at the protest of his doctors he is a confessed "work-aholic". His honour has been tarnished by the corrupt scum surroundiNG him. At the age of 78 he is sill in office everyday trying to push India despite all the $hit he has to swim through to get it done. He is the voice of reason amongst utter idiots- he risked his career on the 2008 US-India civil nuclear deal and correctly predicted the Maoist insurgency as the biggest threat to india way back in 2005 before it was on anyone's radar. What more can one man do? He has done all this IN SPITE of the situation in India, imagine what he could do if India was better.

Utter tragedy that this man who is regarded throughout the world as an icon, hero, legend and is famously "loved be world leaders" and has been voted the "best world leader" numerous times by many organisations but necause of Indian politics he is being spoken of in such regard.

Do some homework pal, if it wasn't for this man there wouldmbe much more to worry about.

May not be case but pure bargain might have restricted us to become over cosy with Japan and USA. Its more important to watch what USA has to say about China and US China discourse of ties. Why India should promptly attempt to fit into one block when no one else is doing so. We have no point to prove to China when we are capable to restrict any Chinese foul play against us, including military aggression. It tells nothing but Indian confidence of creating balance between all player and test its self as an independent entity.

Sure India develops cold feet on talks with Japan and U.S because evil China has cold water flown from tibet to India, How much India has leverage to "form" some kind of "political" coalition against China? Japan and U.S are China great trading parners without saying that China own America and Japan need more China than India to access the market and investment. In south Asians countries, China invest and do more businees with Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and our lovely Vietnam neibhor...how about India?

India an nothing else but a peon on the geopolitical strategic chess...Dare to defy China than India will get a cold hands as well, we can ally Iran ,these people still have a fresh memory for of being descendants of the glorious Babylon empire, not hard for them to rebuild their empire at all...China has financial and technical help them. it will be a super counter weight to India in that region...even Iran has no hostility against India, they certainly want a good seat and saying in that region...this is will not only nightmare for India but for U.S as well

India, Japan and US should naturally come together to form an alliance regarding current and future developments in Asia setting aside their so called 'idealism' and past. Specially India should stop this BS of 'cold feet'. Either here or there, not in-between.
