Skywalk, Gangtok, Sikkim

Skywalk is an ambitious, Rs 500 Crore project of the Department of Tourism, Government of Sikkim (India). Based on the lines of Skywalk in Grand Canyon, USA, this project involves construction of glass cantilever at Rawangla – a major tourist destination of Sikkim. This is a joint venture project of VKA, Grant Thornton India and Grant Thornton South Africa.

Project Brief
A glass cantilever is under design using several layers of Dupont glass laminated to provide appropriate structural strength. To achieve financial viability, development of infrastructure, connectivity and additional accommodation for tourists is also proposed.

Emaar MGF - Windermere Estate in Umpling (Shillong, Meghalaya)

Emaar MGF Land in a joint venture with Windermere would set up a residential complex in Shillong at an initial investment of Rs 400 crore.

Once completed, the 84-acre Windermere Estate coming up at Umpling in Shillong would have villas, community retail centre, clubhouse and a hotel, a company statement said on Monday.

“The development of Windermere Estate would have a multiplier effect on the local economy and provide employment, which will directly and indirectly benefit over 1,000 people. More importantly, this move is a reflection of Shillong’s growing stature as a prominent business and education hub and a world-renowned tourist destination in the north east,” the statement further added. “We have keenly studied the north-east market. Our internal deliberations clearly identified Shillong as the city with tremendous value-proposition and growth for evident reasons; well-traveled populace, changing tastes and a desire to own the best,” Sanjay Choudhary, CEO (East), Emaar MGF said.

POWER POTENTIAL IN THE NORTH EASTERN REGION

In terms of hydro power, the North Eastern Region has the potential of about 58971 MW i.e. almost 40% of the country's total hydro potential. Additionally, the Region also has abundant resource of coal, oil and gas for thermal power generation. In spite of such huge potential the Region ranks lowest in the country in terms of per capita energy consumption. This has been mainly due to inhospitable climatic conditions, remote location and inaccessibility of geographical locations

However with continual improvement of infrastructure and communication facilities, the North East region stands to become the Power House of India by utilising its surplus power potential especially in the hydel sector.

HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER :

The NE Region is blessed with a huge hydro potential in the country which is estimated at about 58971MW, out of which only less than 2% (two percent) (1095MW) has so far been harnessed. As per the report status of Hydro Electric Power Potential listed by CEA as on 31.10.2006 out of the total capacity of 58971MW only 4029 MW of this enormous capacity has been tapped which amounts to less than 7% (seven percent) , the remaining 93% (ninety three percent) is yet to be exploited and harnessed.

NATURAL GAS :
151.68 Billion Cum reserve which is capable of generating 3000 MW for 30 years .

COAL :
945.03 Million tones against 186 Billion tones of reserves. With the reserves in the N.E Region , it is sufficient to produce 3000 MW for 50 years.
