Indian Railways' earnings rise
The Indian Railways have earned Rs 1,26,028.54 crore (Rs 1260.29 billion)

from passenger and goods traffic from April 2013 to February 2014 as compared to Rs 1,12,017.08 crore (Rs 1120.17 billion) in the same period last year, registering an increase of 12.51 per cent.

The total earnings from goods traffic during April–February were Rs 85,682.76 crore (Rs 856.83 billion) compared to Rs 77,368.52 crore (Rs 773.69 billion) during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 10.75 per cent, according to Railway Ministry data.

Railways have carried 953.05 million tonnes (MT) of freight traffic during this period as against 911.44 MT during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 4.57 per cent.

The passenger earnings during this period were Rs 33,755.46 crore (Rs 337.55 billion) as against Rs 28,915.09 crore (Rs 289.15 billion) during the same period last year, a jump of 16.74 per cent.

The earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 3480.28 crore (Rs 34.8 billion) during this period as compared to Rs 2851.90 crore (Rs 28.52 billion) during the same period last year, an increase of 22.03 per cent.

However, there is a decline in the number of passengers booked in April-February as compared to the same period last year.

The total number of passengers booked during April-February were 7710.11 million compared to 7790.46 million during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.03 per cent.

OnTopic - Railways do have a long way to go. Unless and untill they increase there fairs based on operating costs and future development plans... the growth after 2-3 years would just stall, given the reduntant technology and old infrastructure.

Mumbai, IMO. New Delhi isn't too bad either.
The Southern Mega cities ( HYD, BLR, MAA ) are crap when it comes to infrastructure...but the way these cities go about their business, one may not even realize it ! I'm guessing KOL is somewhere in between ...

I live in mumbai and mumbai does not even come close to New Delhi in terms of infrastructure...Maharashtra all though a leader in almost every economical aspect has very unreliable infrastructure.

@blackface I live in space-starved south Bombay as well, and in comparison to Delhi, we lag behind in road and metro rail infrastructure, and that's about it. New roads and metro routes are being carved out from the city's ridiculously dense morphology where possible, but not as quickly as it needs to be. Now as far as everything else, namely, water & electricity (both supplied 24x7 since independence from the British in 1947), street life, social scene etc goes, I'd say B'bay trumps Delhi.

Let's get back to posting pictures, shall we?

Interesting to see the comments on infrastructure, imho,
  • 'Indian' cities - Colonial British more than, 'Colonial' Mughal, had the best infra. in the world 1/2 a century ago.
Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Bangalore and New Delhi specially, also Karachi, Lahore, Dacca, Lucknow or Cochi had far better road's then road use (not many motor vehicles but the roads had been laid out in advance), far better city rail, tram and bus services then today and the open, sylvan public parks, promenades, water bodies, cricket pitches and pavements were something else. I can easily compare to our colonial Canadian infrastructure. India's infra back then was miles ahead of Canada's. Also, except Melbourne, I haven't seen India's erstwhile level of infra. or anything similar in Oz., USSR, EU, or N.America dating back to those times, anywhere. It may exist, I don't know.

Point is that India inherited some of the best cities in the world. In the act of nation building, and unfortunate massive wealth transfer overseas, what they did to their 'Jewels in the Crown' is googling us in the face, luckily minus the stench. It's ok, in 5-10 yrs., Indian cities are due to recover from their recent gasping throws but not to be nostalgic or nothing, the old sentiment of elitist, sylvan and magnanimous city planning are replaced by practical, real-estate valuations.

For eg. The semi-public Mughal gardens or mausoleum of Taj Mahal, or the the railways of the British Vs. Commie block colonies and flats of socialist era India and today's American style highways and high rise apt. towers. Definite erosion of class, style, prestige towards utility.

I'd say public transport in Bombay is more efficient overall, though Delhi's is more comfortable (because it's newer), and I'm not trying to take away from our national capital's amazing metro services. Speaking of public transport, I went for a quick ride on the Bombay Monorail today for the very first time, and boy did it feel good!

Maan. Its getting boring to see these developments again n again. With the elections in hand, things have slowed down and hence the projects stalled. Only wish to see Modi in power and with improved market sentiments and new innovative thot process we getting back to our boom days.
