chennai set to get world's largest cricket stadium

CHENNAI: Plans are afoot to bowl out Melbourne and Eden Garden cricket stadiums.

The world's largest cricket stadium is all set to come up
near Chennai in time for
World Cup 2011, which India will co-host with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The executive committee of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association will finalize the contractor to build the "ultra modern cricket stadium" on a 50-acre site in Karunkuzhipallam village in Kanchipuram district, 25km from the city. The stadium's name will be announced by the association after consultation with the state government.

The highlight of the stadium, besides the size and seating capacity, will be a retractable roof to ensure matches don't get washed out during rain.

TNCA president N Srinivasan said the stadium would be on a par with world standards. "The government has leased out the land to us for 30 years and we have remitted Rs 1 lakh as payment. TNCA executive committee will meet on Thursday to discuss plans, including awarding of construction contract," Srinivasan told TOI .

The stadium complex will occupy 30 acres. "The stadium will have more seating capacity than Eden Gardens or the Melbourne Cricket Ground, though we can't give an exact number at this stage. It will meet futuristic safety standards," said TNCA honorary secretary KS Viswanathan.

Melbourne has a seating capacity of close to 1 lakh, while Eden Gardens can accommodate up to 90,000 spectators. The rest of the area will be used for two smaller fields for research and training, besides rehabilitation.

The man behind two great railway projects in India. Konkan Railways (760 km connecting Mumbai to Kochi) and Delhi metro. E Sreedharan a railway Engineer now MD of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. When people thought it is not possible to have the Konkan Railways in the harsh terrain he did it. Again people have doubt in their mind about the financial viability of Delhi Metro, but he again proved all of them wrong. Delhi Metro is only the 2nd Metro in the world which is making profit. At the age of 76 retirement is a long way for this champion.

Indian's first and world's 2nd extradosed bridge
An extradosed bridge employs a structure that is frequently described as a cross between a girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge.

India's first Extradosed Bridge and world's second of its kind, constructed by Gammon India Limited for Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is a part of 2.81 km long viaduct at Barakhamba - Indraprastha section on Line-3 for crossing Northern Railways tracks. This bridge is 196.3 metres long, with the main span over the railway lines 93 metres long. In addition, the bridge has a 302-metre radius curvature and the main span has been kept long to allow for future expansion of Indian Railways lines. The first such bridge was constructed in Japan.
The most important part of this bridge is, when it was constructed Indian railways refuse to close the track below. As it was impossible on their part to close the track through which 93 trains pass in an hour.

In India while the medical tourism is flourishing, the medical facility available for a common man is pathetic. But there is still hope for people like Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty and Narayan Hrudayalay, Bangalore.
