India Developing, but still a long way to go

India can generate 68,000 MW power from renewable sources: WB

NEW DELHI: The World Bank today said 68,000 MW of power costing less than Rs 6 per unit can be generated from renewable energy sources, which can play an important role in increasing India's energy security.

A report by the multilateral funding agency said that the 68,000 MW of wind, hydro and biomass energy can be harnessed at less than Rs 6 per unit.

"Developing indigenous renewable energy sources, which have low marginal costs of generation, are more economically viable in the long run," the study --Potential of Renewable Energy in India -- said.

India's electricity demand is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 7.4 per cent in the next 25 years. Generation capacity will have to increase five-fold to keep pace with the growth of demand.

The installed capacity of the country stands at about 1,70,229 MW from all sources of energy, as per official data.

The report also suggested that renewable energy development can also be an important tool for regional economic development within the country.

The states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand have 65 per cent of India's small hydropower resources. Much of the economically attractive wind potential in Orissa or the biomass potential in Madhya Pradesh also lies largely undeveloped, it added.

The report emphasised that coal , gas and oil have witnessed considerable price volatility in recent years, renewables are the only free hedging mechanism against price volatility of fossil fuels.

The risk-adjusted cost of renewable energy is lower than that of fossil-based fuels, and their use enhances the price certainty of the portfolio and increases energy security, it said.

Small hydropower, one of the least expensive and most attractive forms of renewable energy, lies largely untapped, the generation costs of small hydropower are comparable with thermal generation sources, and the generation costs of biomass are comparable to those of wind.

This resource is the most attractive in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttaranchal.

The entire renewable potential, including solar, is less expensive than diesel, where existing 20,000 MW of diesel based installed capacity points to innovative possibilities of scaling up renewable in a big way, said N Roberto Zagha, World Bank Country Director in India.

The government has set an ambitious target of installing at least 40,000 MW of additional capacity of renewables in the next 10 years.

The report is based on data from nearly 180 wind, biomass, and small hydropower projects in 20 states, as well as information from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission .

Italy to woo investors from India

CHENNAI: After Korea and Japan, it's now Italy that has come to attract Indian trade interest. Invitalia, the national agency for investment promotion and enterprise development that operates on behalf of the Italian government and consultancy firm Deloitte made a presentation to the local business community on 'Invest in Italy - Advantages and Opportunities in the Centre of the Mediterranean Area' on Friday.

India is among the seven geographies, that include China, Japan, the US, Israel and the West Asian countries, where Invitalia has been travelling to attract investments into Italy. "Italy is among the most stable economies of Europe. During the recession, our economy contracted by around 5.5%, but we didn't have a banking crisis," said Giuseppe Arcucci, inward investment director of Invitalia.

In 2009-10, India invested 12.336 million euros in Italy, while Italy invested 82.427 million euros in India.

"Italy has a large number of family owned mid market companies, most of them operating in sectors that are of interest to India. These would be ideal for Indian companies to enter into joint ventures or acquire," said James R Noble, national leader (financial advisory services), Deloitte Italy. "The areas that India might be interested in are apparel, auto, engineering, biotech and pharma."

A study by Deloitte said that there has been an increase of 38% in Indian companies in Italy from 2008 in terms of numbers. The revenues generated by Indian owned companies increased in 2009 by 160%.

"Currently, around 67 Indian companies have bought Italian companies," said Arcucci. "While we have no targets per se, we certainly want to boost Indian investment in Italy. As of now, it is the US and other European countries that have invested majorly in Italy."

Italy is the seventh largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1782 billion. It is also the second largest manufacturing hub in Europe after Germany.

Kerala to have India's largest mosque

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kozhikode in Kerala will soon have India's largest mosque where 25,000-30,000 devotees can pray at a time. Estimated to be built at Rs 40 crores, the structure measuring 2.5 lakh square feet will push Delhi's Jama Masjid to a distant second when it takes shape.

"The mosque is planned on a 12 acre plot. Eight acres will be set apart for landscaping and host a Mughal-style garden. The main structure will be confined to 4 acres," Shaar-i-Mubarak Grand Masjid architect Riyaz Mohammed told TOI.

The mosque is part of Muslim organisation Markazu-Ssaquafathi-Ssunniyyah's knowledge city complex at Karanthur near Kozhikode. The group's head and Islamic scholar Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musliyar has planned the mosque.

" Markaz Knowledge City will come up on 600 acres of land and will also have an engineering college, medical college and township. It will be based on Islamic traditions," said Mohammed. The mosque will also have a library for Islamic research and conference hall and will adopt the green building concept.

Kochi to get India's first transshipment hub, facility for big ships

The opening of India's first transshipment hub at Kochi on Friday will allow large ships and vessels to berth, refuel, offload and upload cargo, before taking off to different destination across the world. With Kochi being on the international sea-route, the hub will help in improving traffic

significantly, especially those who are moving from East Asia to Europe.
The entire cargos which are getting offloaded or uploaded at the neighbouring transshipment hub in Colombo will now be possible in India.

"This will save cost and time substantially in transportation of containers related to export and import, as the entire business India had to conduct at Colombo hub, would now take place here," said secretary, ministry of shipping, K Mohandas.

A transshipment hub is the zone from where shipment of goods or containers takes place to an intermediate destination, and then from there to yet another destination.

The hub at Kochi is a public private partnership (PPP) project, in which the private promoter Dubai-based DP World has invested Rs 1,200 crore in the first phase and the government Rs 1551.4 crore for building road, rail and dredging. In the second phase, DP World will invest another Rs 2,118 crore.

Once the Kochi hub gets operational, it will handle 1 million TEU container ships per year in the first phase.

TEU refers to the capacity of container ships and 1 TEU is equal to 20-feet equivalent unit container. The capacity will be enhanced to 3 million TEU.

The hub also has container freight station and a feeder service to other ports.

Hope some pakistanis come and visit these thread .
These ppl only see poverty in India and fail to see development .

We know that India is developing in a very fast rate however, there is no Benefit of the development if you do not have good relations with your neigbours specially China and Pakistan. Both are nuclear powers and if Indian government is not willing to resolve its long disputes like Siachin and Kashmir it can trigger war any time. and all this development will vanish in seconds. So i advise people of India to think of that and resolve the issues by discussion. Kashmir is a fire ball which can trigger war between two nuclear nations and you can see the results of nuclear weapons i.e. total distruction for both counteries.

Thanks for the concern Faisal. I am sure we'll be just fine. Some of the issues in the neighborhood are in do not have easy answers. Time will find a solution.

Isn't he a genius? He just nullified the 103 pages of development post with one nuclear attack.

Thats obviously the smarter move. Anywho lets leave it to this, it will attract a lot of trolls otherwise and spoil this otherwise sane thread.
