India designs World's first Thorium based Nuclear Reactor

Not the Arihant class subs but the follow on from S5 .

I think that's going to take time ..
India is concentrating making two follow up SSBN modeled closely to INS Arihant ...so far as you know .

I had read somewhere that the work on 2'nd 83 MW PWR is in advanced progress which will power INS Aridaman ...

we are unlikely to have any info in public domain anytime soon because of Top secret nature of these projects ...I mean S5 onwards ...

.
Our Naval Nuclear reactors - the one of which went critical recently for INS Arihant ...is also a military nuclear reactor ...which is not counted anywhere ....

similarly other naval nuclear reactor is being fabricated ...

If you have time and energy you can read following US State department document...it's quite informative

http://fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/78421.pdf
There was a news that the next gen naval reactor for follow up bigger SSBNs around 150-200 MW is already in development .

Any link for that .
as far as I knew even INS Aridaman is supposed to have same 83 Mwt PWR similar to INS Arihant ...

I have no information about 150-200 MW next generation nuclear reactor ...I tried searching but didn't get any more information. will post once I get the information. thanks ...
Nuclear power received special mention in the budget speech. This underlines the Indian government’s commitment to go ahead with nuclear power despite the Fukushima problems and protests by environmentalists. India is building on its collaboration with the United States, Australia and Russia, for nuclear technology and fuel. Unit one of the Kundankulam project in Tamil Nadu is now critical, and the fast breeder reactor at Kalpakkam power project is near completion, he said. The country hopes to have 10,080 MW of nuclear power by 2017. FM says we currently have 7 nuclear reactors under construction! :coffee:

some information i find useful to share from Prasun K. Sengupta blog

6) In addition to the two indigenous 700mW PHWRs now coming up at Rawatbhatta (Rajasthan) & two more at Kakrapar (Gujarat), financial sanction has just been accorded for two more at Gorakhpur (UP), two at Kaiga (Karnataka), two at Mahi Banswara (Rajasthan), two at Chutka & two at Bhimpur (both in MP).

7) Financial sanction has just been accorded for BARC & NPCIL to co-develop an indigenous 900mW PWR by upscaling the 83mW LWR that was developed for the S-2/Arihant, S-3 & S-4 SSBNs.

8) Financial sanction has been just accorded for BARC to develop a 190mW LWR by upscaling the 83mW LWR. This 190mW LWR will also be offered for installation on the projected IAC-2, & on the S-5, S-6 & S-7 SSBNs.

9) Plans are now afoot to seek sanction for an advanced (but upscaled to 150mW) derivative of the 83mW LWR, this being for the IN’s projected reqmt for nine SSNs similar to the Barracuda-class SSN from DCNS.

TRISHUL: Sensor Fitments Of IAC-1/INS Vikrant & INS Vikramaditya Explained

The reference to 190 MW LWR actually comes as part of conversation that ensues ...so you have really scroll down to almost near the end of this page to find this paragraph. It's not article ...But I guess it's based on annual report of BARC ....which I will try to dig out if I get time ...

But I am quite convinced about the authenticity ....

Have to give credit to @proud_indian to dig out this one for us ....

this jarves guy won't be convinced with this data as the rely more on wiki than these sources.

by the way some off topic info regarding indigenous submarine steel

"A most laughable story indeed. Why? Because DMR-249A and 249B steel, equivalent to Russian AB2 grade steel that went into manufacturing of Project 71/IAC-1, was supplied by ESSAR Steel. For submarines, Alloy Steels Plant (ASP) of SAIL has produced for the first time in India a special grade steel (DMR-292A). The high-strength and low-temperature item was manufactured according to the specifications developed by Hyderabad-based Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory of DRDO. DMR-292A will be processed into plates through Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) directly or via Bokaro Steel Plant before supply to DMRL for further testing. Conclusion: S-2/Arihant, S-3 & S-5 nuclear-powered submarines are all being built from imported steel & titanium."

i am surprised you never heard of this blog before

just read the comment sections of his blog and u will find some real mind blowing information
and besides that you can ask him any query regarding defence and he will reply you soon

190 mW Reactor will be ' offered ' for hybrid propulsion system for IAC-2 , besides S-5, S-6, S-7 SSBN ...
also it states that plans are afoot to seek sanction for 150 mW LWR for Baraccuda class SSN from DCNS ...( that is something also new for me )

.
@proud_indian ,thanks for sharing this excellent news.
And about that steel i think you are right but let me do a little bit of research first :D
Aur meri taang khichna band kar :D

@kurup , @Indo-guy ,according to the source given by @proud_indian ,we are devloping a 150mw nuclear reactor also for our SSN which conforms that we are devloping SSN's also :cheesy:

Indeed the comments section is several fold longer than articles ..and almost all of them are no nonsesnse type and high value comments and so are the replies given by the blogger ...I must say he is a damned good guy ...

May seem bit off topic ...but I got to see such amazing discussion between blooger and commentators on only other site called as Damn Interesting • A collection of legitimately fascinating information culled from the past, present, and anticipated future.

well I am just a medico ..so defense related topics I read only as a hobby ....so had not come across Mr Prasun Sengupta's blog before ....
