India deploys more fighter jets in Kashmir

NEW DELHI (AFP) — India has deployed its top fighter jets in its part of disputed Kashmir bordering Pakistan, officials and a report said Wednesday.

At least six Soviet-built Sukhoi-30MKI jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, have been deployed at Avantipura air force base near Kashmir's largest city Srinagar.

The base is equipped with crash-prone MiG-21 jets, which India first imported from the Soviet Union in the 1960s.

"The Sukhois had been held deep down our strategic corridor in (the western Indian city of) Pune, and their deployment in Kashmir will address any perceived threat," an air force official said on condition he was not named.

"But this is a defensive stance," the officer said.

Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, commander of India's Western Air Command, was quoted by the Hindustan Times newspaper as saying the deployment was "temporary."

India acquired 60 Sukhoi-30s in 2001. The twin-seater frontline jets can carry eight tonnes of armaments including nuclear bombs and cruise at a speed of 3,200 kilometres (1,988 miles) an hour.

The air force official said the Sukhois would patrol Indian borders extending up to China and fly across Kashmir's rugged Kargil peaks, where India and Pakistan fought a mini-war in 1999.

The Indian Air Force, the world's fourth largest, is also planning to deploy up to 40 Sukhoi jets in the northeast close to the border with China, the official added.

The Kashmir deployment comes amid strains in the India-Pakistan peace process, with New Delhi accusing Islamabad of renewed support for cross-border militancy and ceasefire violations along the Line of Control dividing Kashmir.

The two countries have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir since their independence in 1947. Each holds the region in part but claims it in full.

Yes agreed and one more thing that with US-Pakistan tension started to rise on Pak-Afghan border, India is also going to jump in thats usual bunya mentality will never go.

Apart from that after recent civil uprising of Kashmiris against occupier India, now Indians have come up with new idea to kill innocent Kashmiris by bombing them.

Have spy flights over Pakistan to transfer information to their Israeli masters as well.

wow thats what i called imaginations

Planes are meant to fight and not for showcase thats why they deployed in bases. Its will cover both PAK and China from their good move by india.

Why you think that what you have done Baluchistan will do in Kashmir ;) ?

So IAF must be bringing this MKI's to learn more about the various points and landscape in Himalayan region so that in case of any conflict, they can be deployed at a short notice. I think we should carry on with upgraded Mig-21s and Mirage to tackle any conflict.

I don’t understand that why IAF needs to publish such a news that has more sizzling masala value than any operational value???:undecided:

First of all its not even a full squadron deployment....6 aircraft means that its only a detachment or one-third of the squadron....so it also implies that they wont be at Awantipur permanently....Which means that they are either there as a part of some exercise or just a usual deployment in the north......Please also note that Awanti is just an FOB, its not even a main base...

Since past 10 to 12 years, IAF has been regularly deploying squadrons / detachments either at Sri Nagar or Awantipur for what they call '' valley flying ''..Its their very usual practice where they carry out medium to low level flying in the region....However, valley flying was discontinued ( probably) in 2003 or 2004 when two IAF Jaguars collided head-on and both pilots died ....Their wreckage and bodies was found many days later...PAF was more eager that the wreckage were found, because there was a theory going on those days that the missing Jaguars might have defected to Pakistan....Anyway, the valley flying was resumed after a break of an year or two and I very much believe that these SU-30s are most likely deployed for same and there is nothing sinister about their deployment...

Okay, lets create an hypothetical headline and assess if it carries any operational value ??? PAF DEPLOYS SIX NUCLEAR CAPABLE F-16s NEAR INDIAN BORDER AT LAHORE....Wow sizzling news. Isn’t it??? While this news carries no operational value but still it might create a lot of stir, loads of gossips, and many suspicions and, many will start to pull their hairs out and some cynical might term as a start of the Armageddon...

However, its funny to note that while these aircrafts if remained deployed at Sargodha or Faisalabad or elsewhere will not raise any eyebrows but its just the word Proximity that does all the magic. although an F-16 from Sargodha (that is around 200 Km from border) will be capable of doing the same damage but the word Lahore here plays its part.....Similarly, a SU-30 deployed at Adampur or Pathankot will be able to create the same punch as compared to if it was deployed at Srinagar or Awanti or Amritsar.....But then the word Adampur wont create the sensation that Srinagar creates ..

Unlike an Army unit, an airforce squadron doesn’t need to be in the close proximity of border or theatre of operations....In 1965; PAF fought the whole battle from Sargodha i.e. 200 km from border and still achieved what it wanted to and supported the Army as well...

I am unable to understand that what does IAF gain from such useless deployments by sending 5 or 6 aircrafts closer to the borders that bear very little operational value....Why all this media hype ? What’s their real objectives behind these moves??

Last month their Chief made statements about PAF fighters busting their border, then they tried to make headlines with SU-30s deploying near Chinese border just short of Olympics and now this.....Why all this media attention ???

I am sorry to say but when I read such hocus pocus headlines, these just make me laugh...

No x-man that new wont create a stir beacuse if India deploy jets at normal International borders just like the PAF deployment it dosnt create stir.

AS far as deploying jets by India at disputed/occupied Kashmir at LoC it does ring a bell.
That too after Israeli army chief visit to Indian Held Kashmir.

Lahore is not even an FOB and not been deployed by fighters since very long...And now when you deploy 6 nuclear capable F-16 at the base that hasn’t been deployed for last 20 years at just 18 km from the Indo –Pak border...I think it should make some headlines...But anyway, as I had mentioned in my last post that it was a hypothetical situation so I wont press it any further...you may be right too..

Whether we like it or not, IAF stations at Sri Nagar / Jammu / Awanti pur are under their operational and administrational control...Not Ours...!! Its upto them if they want to deploy SU-30, Mirage-2000 or whichever aircraft for whatever duration....why should we have any problems?

The only thing which seemed odd to me in the news clip was that why IAF even had to mention that SU-30s are at Awantipur or give reference to Kashmir. IAF has been regularly deploying there for Valley flying (for over a decade) and it shouldn’t need any mention. And by deploying SU-30 at Awanti, I don’t see gaining any operational advantage either....So why to mention in the news again??? The whole purpose of news was to create some sensational only rather than getting any operational advantage...

PAF F-16s are regularly flying in North West and Swat area; did they deploy F-16s at Peshawar to carry out anti-terrorist ops??? Or did PAF create any hype in the media that they are deploying at Peshawar...No, they didn’t, F-16s are still operating from Sargodha....Deploying at Peshawar will not give any operational edge or advantage which they cant achieve from Sargodha.....Jana Ji, I hope it clarifies..:enjoy:

X_MAN thanks for clarifying to our conspiracy theorists. You never know somebody in media saw the planes taking-off or landing and came up with their own version of why they were deployed etc.
