New Delhi: India has defended its decision to deny visas for a US government delegation charged with monitoring international religious freedom.

The delegation from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom was scheduled to leave for India on Friday for a long-planned visit with the support of the US State Department and the US embassy in New Delhi.

"As a pluralistic, non-sectarian, and democratic state, and a close partner of the United States, India should have the confidence to allow our visit," USCIRF chairman Robert George said in a statement.

The Indian Embassy in Washington retaliated by stating, "We do not see the locus standi of a foreign entity like USCIRF to pass its judgment and comment on the state of Indian citizens' constitutionally protected rights."

In its 2015 report, the bipartisan USCIRF said incidents of religiously motivated and communal violence had reportedly increased for three consecutive years.

It said that despite its status as a pluralistic, secular democracy, India had long struggled to protect minority religious communities or provide justice when crimes occur, creating a climate of impunity.

US law allows for imposition of sanctions on countries flagged by the commission as "of particular concern," but the USCIRF's recommendations are not binding and these are not automatically imposed.

Nothing new here... they do this drama every year... They want o come.. India refuses visa... they cry.. and the story repeats every year.
India does not need certificates on religious freedom from countries where religious places are constantly vandalized and people are attacked for wearing their religious dress/symbols.

Does being a Pakistani make you inherently low witted?

It has nothing to do with India being secular or religious. As a sovereign country we do not accept or invite any other country to pass judgements on our country. Who gives US the authority to do this? And what locus standi do they have. And why should we endorse it by giving visas explicitly for this purpose.

These questions of national honour and pride are ones that can not be comprehended by Pakistanis. They lack any concept of national pride. Which is why Pakistanis let everything pass - like US massacring their soldiers(Salala), their unarmed citizens(drone attacks) or targeted killings(Raymond Davis).

China releases a list of human rights infringments occuring in US every year.
GoI should support that.
We should provide our own list.

Personally I am very concerned about the treatment of blacks in the US. They get shot down by policemen in cold blood, confined to ghettos, living on welfare, over represented in prison and under represented in board rooms or even at the Oscars

The GOI should send a yearly delegation to the US to study the treatment of African Americans and widely disseminate their report in support of fellow people of color.

You are right. India is secular and there is nothing to hide. But our experience with some international NGOs has been very negative. They pick up one off incident to colour the whole nation negatively. If any nation is interested in knowing about the religious freedom in India it should ask its diplomatic mission to send a report on the topic.

Do you what a secular society means? is india still a secular when it applies hindus customs against other factions of the society.By banning muslims from eating beef and stopping from slaughtering cows during Eid.
