Burma Times Desk Report: July 04, 2015
The UNHRC on Friday adopted a resolution on addressing the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Burma.
The resolution could not be adopted on Thursday due to the absence of the Burmese representative.
In show of solidarity with the Burmese regime, India disassociated itself from the resolution. Instead the regional power defended the human rights situation in Burma, the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ajit Kumar said, “we have serious concerns on the draft resolution which focuses on issues that are sectarian in nature… With respect to Rakhine State, we have noted that the Government of Myanmar has taken steps towards restoration of law and order and has expressed readiness to cooperate with UN and other humanitarian agencies regarding rehabilitation of those affected by violence.”
Those affected by violence have not been rehabilitated in more than three years and lives in refugee camps where living conditions are among the worst in the world, according to international NGOs.
Burma also said there were no human rights abuses against Muslims in their country.
The resolution urged the ‘Government of Myanmar to grant full citizenship rights, in keeping within a transparent due process, to Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State, including by reviewing the 1982 Citizenship Law’.
