I have no idea what all the hullabaloo is about. The Supreme Court has essentially done nothing except for stating the obvious, i.e. the Sharia Courts have no legal sanctity. Which Muslim group ever claimed that & why are they interested in that? The system works on societal pressure, just like Khap panchayats work, declaring them as having no legal basis has zero effect. Essentially the Supreme Court has upheld the right by these "chaps" to make whatever outrageous claims they want as long as the parties submit to it. Pointless and a waste of time. If there is any cheering going on today, it is probably within those who support sharia rulings.

A passive judgement, ergo my comment on its utter insufficiency, at the end of the day social and political pressure will render all such verdicts irrelevant unless we have a judgement which explicitly bans the very existence of such extra judicial bodies which have assumed upon themselves powers due to inane and idiotic social structures, a proactive judgement is required.

I mean, when the SC judgement on the Sha Bano case could be rendered null and void by Rajiv and co. then the problem is obviously a symptom of an affliction in the society which bleeds into our polity rather than of the laws.

They're just handing folks (like us) who want legitimate demands such as the UCC met a lollipop because not even the RSS folks and Modi today have the balls to actively enforce such a game changer (a necessary one) AND demolish all the pre-existing structures which may cut into the authority of the UCC if they are allowed to exist without first trying everything else. Looks like we are in for just a more efficient Vajpayee Ji type "consensus" government.

No, SC cannot ban Panchayats or Sharia courts! SC honor and encourage these activities if those are done in good faiths and used as consulting bodies. Asking advise/ opinion is a civil right of Indian citizen and any one can consult any formal/ informal body/ group/ org.

You are wrong! You cannot abolish a very effective system because a few abuses it. If so first thing we must stop election MPs ... You may find lots of uneducated and very corrupt ministers shall we stop voting ?

Gram panchayat are the legislative assembly of villages and very basic fabric of our constitution and necessary fo upkeep and development fo villages. Sarpanchs are elected thru formal election by villagers. Their sole task is to manage village administration. They are not judicial bodies!
