What's new

India currently has 520 kilograms of weapons-grade plutonium

can someone shade light on India's current maximum nuclear yield?? I mean some years back It was said that India has ability to produce weapons of about 200kt....any further developments??

@kaykay, I read a few reports of the 70's, which mentioned India had about 800 kg's of weapons grade Uranium in it's reserves this report probably was of the late 60's and early 70's and I remember posting it here on PDF a couple of years back, the most critical and conservative of all figures as to weapons grade Uranium possession with India presently is for making 1000 nukes.

Now, the nuclear yield is a big question mark, but many sources again have mentioned that India can come up with 200 KT nukes - I can safely assume it's higher than that - but that's an assumption.

India's nuclear program is a huge secret with no one knowing how much weapons grade Uranium we possess (if it was 800kgs in 1970) I can estimate at least 5 times of that now - 4000 kgs, and also no one knows the max nuke yield that we can make, but then counting on the 5 decades of experience that we have in nukes I must say we should have much higher capabilities than what is discussed.

I just wish there can be complete nuclear disarmament in my lifetime. But I have a feeling this is not going to be the case. In fact, it is surprising that no one has gotten their hands on a dirty nuke and set it off. I guess it became a continent thing. Am glad the South Americans and Africans decided to forgo these monstrosities. I bet it is a matter of time before some right wing loony organization gets their hands on one and sets it off - that would probably be the catalyst for complete nuclear disarmament.

BTW - I don't know much about the science but aren't India's nukes more dependent on uranium rather than plutonium?

India needs 7-8 nukes for pakistan, 200 for china (supposing that about 100 will be able to penetrate chinese defense) and 40-50 as reserve.

So around 250 nukes of 200 kt will be enough.
