Russia's Yantar shipyard acting chief executive Oleg Shumakov said that India is interested in acquiring four advanced modified ships.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — India is considering whether to place an order for four more warships with Russia's Yantar shipyard that has already built six frigates for the Indian Navy, the shipyard's acting chief executive told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
"We will explore the possibility of new orders to build [vessels] for the Indian fleet. In any case, India has already said it is interested in acquiring four more advanced modified ships," Oleg Shumakov, acting CEO of Yantar shipyard, located in Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea, said.

Representatives of the shipyard are expected to discuss the question of future contracts during talks in India later in February, Shumakov added.
He described the shipyard's experience in building Talwar-class frigates for the Indian Navy as "fruitful and mutually beneficial."
In July 2014, the shipbuilding firm delivered the last of the three guided missile frigates to India, in accordance with a $1.6-billion contract signed in 2006. Each frigate was armed with eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, jointly developed by Russia and India.

Pace the order for submarines. We have good surface capability. It is the underwater capabilities we lack.

Also we want nuclear powered battle cruisers like the Kirov Class which can add real firepower to a CBG, rather than spending billions on small more quantity laden assets.

Almost all of the Shipyards in India booked for more than a decade. that's why MoD is looking to order more from abroad.

I think its agood choice if IN wants to boom its capabilities faster

As per my understanding all are booked.

Our ship production capability is very poor you know. For a country our size, our economy and our military level, we produce a terrible rate of ships and DWT is really low. South Korea and China are decades ahead in production capabilities.

Shipping has to increase in India as a potent industry. It is one of the strategic industries where the nation gains capabilities, builds capacity, earns forex and also adds to its mass production structure.

We need more shipyards then.

The government should throw open the field to more investors keen on shipbuilding capabilities in India. It is a huge market not just for military but also civilian shipbuilding.

In the light of ship-building technology Ukraine is a much better alternative, but sadly it's in chaos now. Russia's ship-building is far less capable than its submarine-building, and the unacceptably long period of Vikramatiya's building is the best proof. Why don't choose UK? They may share the technology of type-45 destroyer with you as long as you pay.

technology or access to technology is not the problem . them main problem is building the fast without compromising in quality i think China South Korea and japan are the best equipped production lines when it come to building ships both civilian and defense in Asia off-course USA is always there as the world leader . what we need is infrastructure development and skilled work force that can meet the requirements for present scenario. reason for giving Russian contracts since we already worked with them and working with them just cutting off bureaucracy and saving time there will be delays at-least not as delayed by some home yards

We are not choosing anyone,we are self sufficient in Ship building right now & it is highly unlikely that we will place such a order

I see, you want speed. Maybe Japan & SK would be good alternatives, but besides the factor of shipyard, the time line is also relevant to the foreign parts like Israeli-made missile systems and so on. Also, since Russia's economy has been in a poor state forl ong after USSR collapsed, there were only a few orders for these shipyards, which results in that many experienced workers have left and many equipments have been outdated. Fortunately after the Vikramatiya order, the shipyard had the money to recall much of its original ability. Anyway, it'd be much faster with Russian shipyards' help.

But, India should build more capable shipyards. Orders for foreign shipyard do nothing good for indigenous shipbuilding development. Modi's make-in-india should take this into account.

Well existing shipyards are going in for huge modernisation and capacity augmentation projects but these will take a few years to produce results, by 2020-2 the productive capacity in India will be 2/3 times what it was in 2012 so I hear.
