It is all over for India's first missile development programme launched in 1983 under APJ Abdul Kalam.

The programme has been plagued by cost and time over runs, but according to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India has developed most of its missiles under this programme.

These include the surface-to-surface Agni missiles, the shorter range Prithvis, the surface-to-air Trishul and long-range surface-to-air Akash missiles.

The fourth generation anti-tank missile Nag is the only one yet to be inducted. The DRDO said future projects will be taken up with foreign collaboration.

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) India today announced scrapping of the country's strategic integrated guided missile programme, and said the development and production of most of futuristic weapons systems would henceforth be undertaken with foreign collobration.

However, longer range missiles, under-sea launched missiles and furturistic weapons systems like electronic counter-warfare measures would be "undertaken in-house", said one of the country's top defence scientists Dr S Prahlada.

He said "closure" of the Integrated Development of Guided Missile Programme(IDGMP) had been done as manufacture of the most of the missiles to be developed under the project had been almost completed and inducted into the armed forces.

"Unlike post-Pokhran, when doors to technology transfers were closed on us", now doors of frontline armament technology transfer are now open", he said.

"New missile and weapons systems will be developed within a five-year time frame at low costs, with foreign partners and private industries" Prahalda, Chief Controller at DRDO headquarters, said.

The first of such ventures, Prahalda said, would be development of quick reaction missiles to counter threats from low-flying missiles and fighters and Astra, India first bid to develop a beyond-visual range air-to-air missile.

While India would be collobrating with Israel for development of surface-to-air upgraded spyder missiles, for Astra, New Delhi has roped in French and Russian collobrators. PTI

End of an era i feel. This is the flagship programme which was started to build a missile technology base and a production base for India. Practically ALL of India's missile efforts came directly under it, and it was encompassing of all the efforts made by India on the missile front.

The IGMP consisted of the following:

Agni Ballistic Missile:
The Agni Development is continuing. Agni I and II are under production with Agni III and Agni III+ being tested

Prithvi Ballistic Missile:
Prithvi I and II are under production along with Dhanush(Ship Launched)

Akash Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(SAM)
Akash SAM is also cleared for induction, it is now under production.

Trishul SAM
Trishul has been scrapped, instead a joint Army/IAF Low Level Quick Reaction Missile is on the anvil. It is a JV.

NAG Anti-Tank Guided Missile(ATGM)
I have no idea on the status of Nag. Hopefully it will also be inducted like Akash.

So finally the Integrated Guided Missile Programme has accomplished what it was meant to do, start a designing and manufacturing base for missiles in India. It has achieved that although late. Now a lot of systems will be built with JV's and very sensitive platforms would be built via the complete indigenous way.

This i feel is what is required now, as now India can actually go for JV's, which truely mean 'joint'. If this had started right from the beginning it would have just meant that India was buying.

how can we have joint production of long-range strategic missiles? Doesnt MTCR restrict missiles produced under JV to a max range of 500km?

There is a thought that the US nuke deal is connected with this project being terminated.

As someone has written, India is looking for a new partner.

It is being said, that the same will be delivered by the US as a part of the package and so it is believed it will save all the bother for India!

Oh now your level of prejudicing DRDO has come down so drastically that now you have simultenously bring down the tenure of missile development to 10 years.

Don't worry US has the legacy of turning the international obligations into their favour when it matters, so MTCR will not be the exception.
