India, China growth race 'silly', says Nobel winner

I suggest everyone to read Mr.Sen's opinion piece on Hindu:
The Hindu : Opinion / Op-Ed : Growth and other concerns

The article is not really about India and China, the point Mr.Sen's making is GDP growth is not the only nor the most important measurement of progress.

It's interesting to note how this growth vs progress debate in India closely mirror the one in China, where more and more people are becoming indifferent to GDP growth and demanding more tangible improvements in their lives. When I was in China late last year I can not even talk about GDP without being ridiculed.

the reason why india lags behind china in apparent inferiority in standard of living...

just look at what happened last week in my province...

1.1048km expressway project in india's poorest state cancelled due to silly environmental reasons.

2.Newly renovated downtown of hazratganj already delayed by a year was thrown open but lamp felt down, road was of cheap quality and parking went uneven.the entire stretch has been dugged up again.

3.i live in a major locality in the city...the road infront of my house has been built and dugged up 17 times last year and now its all mud and sand there and the road has a daily traffic of 15000 vehicles a day.

4.seventeen thousands of emigrants came from villages, they sleep on streets and on streets as well.

Wait for "Unique ID cards" to come in and see How the Economy grows, there would be More flow of Money in the economy than ever....

Sure, constructive criticism is always good.

However that NDTV article I posted before, with the headline "China may attack India before 2012", would you consider that to be constructive criticism?

that misunderstanding is because of our different systems.we here in india are all used to this kind of news not only about china but in every matters. we at least most of us don't believe it blindly. channels need some kind of exaggeration to sell.if you listen to hindi news channels and bollywood gossip channels you will say ndtv is better.

Actually, I was under the impression that NDTV was quite "neutral"? (Not like the ToI etc.)

Which was why I was shocked, that it came from them specifically.

I always thought the same. Some Indian media is very similar to Bollywood gossip channels. LMAO. Newsx is nice.

Hey OldKool.... atleast you saw some change and some spending isn't it? Would it have been possible if we were not growing? Agree that most of our cities are lacking basic civic infrastructure, but atleast we are seeing an increase in spending in these sectors.
In the city that I come from, I have see a world of transformation in its infrastructure... nice metaled roads, 24/7 power supply, very active local policing, improvement in health care facilities, good educational institutions... things change albeit at a slow pace. You have to consider the population density all around the country and the number of 2nd and 3rd tier cities in our country to have a stab at the scale at which things need to be done.

We have to keep powering on on both fronts: agriculture and industry to be able to get a holistic growth.

well NDTV also needs sponsors to keep profits coming. it is competing with channels which generally sensationalise things.

for example

first channel : china says relations will not imporve if border disputes are not resolved.

second channel: china threatens war if border disputes r not resolved.

which channel would common public view?

But this applies to Hong Kong media too, and to media in the mainland as well.

And honestly, I would prefer option number one in my day to day life.

Boundary problem can be resolved later.
Chinese people are not anxious to resolve the border issue, Why Indians anxious?
I can not understand. Please note: Now is India controls the southern Tibet! not China.

i dunno much abt media freedom in hong kong and china but here in india only few channels have credibility. my FAV id NDTV because it doesnt exxagerate much. yes few aberrations always take place.

most of the hindi news channels use folllowing topics to increase TRPs:

1. china threatens war with india.

2. generally bashing up pakistani army politicians and ISI.

3. sex crimes.

4. (My Fav), yes ghosts do exist and they live amongst us.

5. the world is going to end soon.

In Hong Kong, "Freedom of the press" is guaranteed under Article 27 of the Basic Law. You can check this yourself.

Yet we don't have any hate campaigns against other countries.

Also I find it extremely disturbing that Indian media is "demonizing" China, as a means of increasing their viewership.

We are neighbours, with a border dispute, and a strategic rivalry... so is it really a good idea for the Indian media to demonize China as a means of making money?
