After the launch of the country's first indigenously built nuclear submarine, India has the 'technical expertise and capability' to build nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and warships, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar has said.

"We have the technical expertise and capability to build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and warships of global standards," Kakodkar said on the sidelines of a function in Mumbai on Tuesday night.

"When the government asks us to build such ships, we will do it... we are confident that we can build even supply propelling energy for aircraft carriers," he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while launching the nuclear-powered submarine 'INS Arihant' had said that the government would be sanctioning development of more such submarines.

Kakodkar said India will aim to set up 40GWe Light Water reactors between 2012 and 2020 and for that "we had to go for international cooperation."

"Once we do this, then the doubling of nuclear power generation capacity can be achieved through fast breeder reactors (FBRs) as these are important for our future thorium programme," he said.

India is also planning to set up 20 units of indigenous 700 MW of pressurised heavy water (PHWR) type reactor and the Centre has already agreed in principle for four such units for which site and environment clearances have been done, Kakodkar said.

. . . .
Even what our elected parliament members do for our benifit. They r costlier than nuclear aircraft.

Plz note i m not saying in support of nuke aircraft carrier.

We may start work on it slowly considering needs in 2050. As our economy powerful to bare it.

.
nucler carrier are good, but before building them we have to try and master the art of conventional carriers then we will think about them as their need arises.

.
yeah man let's do it just for time pass  Tell me what will a Nuclear carrier Benfit us ?
There r many thing we need to look after, one of them is to show our capabilities to the world in science and tech where we r lagging behind...
Also, it will be a huge power demostrator to the world..And may be good for long distance operations..

It won't be a Economically viable option as of now !! we could Possibly think of this Post IAC-2

But a Nuclear carrier wont match up with Our current Military doctrine , we have Many concern to look after like building up a fleet of Submarine ! Besides N-Carrier have Maintenance issues

A Nuclear Carrier need's a back up of a Potent fleet with Destroyer's,Frigate's,Corvette's,Tankers,SSN to build up a Battle group which can project Power which is insufficient in our current fleet

.
It s a good idea for down the road. Right now IN needs to build capacity and skill of operating numerous CBGs and so many fighter/helo SQDs. These are gradual processes no point in going from 0-100 instantly, this will only lead to diaster. Maybe from IAC-4 onwards.

.
We built nuclear submarine and we built aircraft carrier, so there should not be any problem building a nuclear carrier. We should look into this after 2017.

Kudos to the Indian scientists and engineers.

.
India should start working on this so that we can master this technology in next decade or so.

is it true that vikrant can carry more aircraft then vikramaditya ? then which is better carrier vikrant or vikramaditya ?
