Air defence in NE being modernised: Naik

Silchar (Assam), Dec 23 (PTI) Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Pradip Vasant Naik today said the air defence system in India, especially in the northeastern region, is being modernised with induction of sophisticated fighter planes and helicopters.

"The defence system especially in the northeast is being strengthened with the IAF inducting 126 Sukhoi MK1-30 combat jets, 80 MI-17 helicopters, 22 combat helicopters, 197 utility helicopters, 15 heavy-lift helicopters among others," Naik told reporters at Kumbhirgram air force base near here.

When asked if the defence system is being strengthened in view of the Chinese threat, Naik said, "Who is doing what we do not know. This is not in keeping with any Chinese threat, but to strengthen and modernise Indian Air Force."

He also said night landing facility would soon start at Kumbhigram air base after getting nod from defence ministry.

Honestly speaking, i dont think its that of a threat to BD. After all its a big nation, so building more airfields and buying large amount of fighters are very logical....They are strengthening their country, as any nation out there would do......

Just my 2 cent......

Cheers!!!

Eastwatch dont worry - BD does not have to worry about this, this is more related to China.

You are right EastWatch. Its a threat to BD. The whole aim of modernization is to counter BD growing influence in the region (and possibly to support ground forces when they cross over the border).

Beware.

no need of airfields ,let the indian police give the khasis and Bodos a free hand they themselves can become a bloody threat. Those guys are silent killers and they are introverts and don't engage in verbal diarohhea

It is a threat to Bangladesh both in military and in strategic terms. If one recall during Peelkhana massacre india moved its air force and special forces asset close to Bangladesh borders into these forward bases. This indian posture may not be Bangladesh centric but DOES have implication on Bangladesh. Firm stands from Bangladesh on any maritime or border dispute or even in internal situation, india will try to use these forward bases in NE to put pressure on Bangladesh.

India being a big country with over million man force, opposes even Bangladesh raising its special forces. But Bangladesh with smaller defense capability should not worry about indian build up?? I, like many would not accept that line of understanding.

Unfortunately many people are agnostic to defense and strategic matters and thinks less of these threats. Big question is how Bangladesh would neutralize such threat in time of needs??

Hmmmm ...By being more capable militarily or developing nuclear weapons? ..... NO ? .... ok .... how about developing air defence beyond what is capable today? ... i think that is do-able.

Someone already suggested using the foreign reserves. That should be a good start brother. Take the fight to the Indian's. Give them a taste of their own medicine. Show them you are just not paper tiger.

Yes idune vai, i agree with you. But my idea was simply from a military point of view. Strategically speaking, then yes this move COULD be a threat, if not HAS TO. Moreover, if you think that way that means BD throughout 38 years of independence, was ALWAYS under threat from india....because it is not the first time they are getting 126 SU-MKIs and building airbases in north-east. I am sure they have few more in this region.

My suggestion was just considering the PRESENT situation, when nothing in terms of MILITARY is wrong between us. I am not taking their indian side, i am just giving my own opinion. Off course, i may be wrong and it is you BD brothers who should correct me. :agree:

Cheers!!!

We don't need to bolster our north east defences to counter any fictional Bangladeshi threat. This development is related to china.

No offence dude, but we have proved several times in the past that we are no "PAPER TIGER"..... I expected you to know that.....;)

And about taking the fight to enemies, undermanned and under-armed....again a bit of 1971 and 2001 history may answer that.....:coffee:

Cheers!!!

How does this has to do with Bangladesh?. we are trying to bolster our capability in NE.

Some bangaldeshi brothers just start jumping as soon as Indian military patrols in it's own territory. Why are you afraid?. I think bangladeshi's are too worried about our chinese friends.

We Indians are sh!t scared of Bangladeshi's & i also expect you to remember that PAL. So lay off that fear India phobia.

Please take it to the burmese for crying out loud. Thank us for 1971.

Well good to see indian brothers accepting some facts.

About the burmese, why dont we just let the time decide about "whos gonna cry".....

"Thank us for 1971.[/QUOTE]"

Well i had a much bigger reply for this comment of yours....but really its pointless stressing over something we BD members have been trying to get in our neighbours' scholar-brain for a long time and off course in different threads on :pdf:

For a change, how about you thank us for letting two-third of your troops get back home for dinner in 2001....:D

Peace.....

Cheers!!!

So even more powerful China need to be worry about India. So do not talk like this. But yes, may be it will not differ about where is India's air base either in east or west cos they have border with us in every side.

I never disagreed brother. Anyways i guess my BD pals are not getting my point. Never mind, a discussion has million view-points.

Cheers!!!
