India's power generation capacity doubles to 2.34 lakh MW
NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said the country's installed power generation capacity has more than doubled to 2,34,600 MW in the past 10 years.

"India's power generation capacity 10 years ago (2004) was 1,12,700 MW, it has now risen to 2,34,600 MW," finance minister P Chidambaram said in the interim budget (2014-15) speech in Parliament on Monday.

He said over 29,000 MW of power generation capacity has been added in the current financial year alone.
Last week, power secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha said that the government is confident of adding 1,18,000 MW capacity by 2017.

The target includes the shortfall in addition from the previous Plan period, the Planning Commission's current target of over 88,000 MW and nuclear and renewable power capacities.

He said the ministry was unable to achieve the previous plan period (2007-12) target of 78,577 MW due to fuel scarcity issues.

Electricity generation grew by 5.7% in 2013-14 compared to 4% in 2012-13

CHENNAI: Total electricity generation in India is expected to grow at a healthy pace in 2013-14. In its report, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) expects generation to grow by 5.7% in 2013-14 as compared to a 4% rise reported in 2012-13. During the year, it said that power stations in India are expected to generate 963.8 billion units of electricity and that this will be the highest electricity generation seen by the country in a single year.

Electricity generation from all three segments - hydel, nuclear and thermal - will grow at a healthy pace. Thermal power generation accounts for around 80-85% of total power generation in India. In 2013-14, thermal power generation is expected to grow by 5%, said the CMIE report. During the year, gas-based generation is expected to extend its fall. However, a higher output from coal-based power plants will help thermal power generation record reasonable growth.

Gas-based generation had declined by 6.8% in 2011-12 and by 28.5% in 2012-13, said the report. Lower availability of natural gas, especially due to declining output from the Krishna-Godavari basin, impacted gas-based power generation. The report further said that a downward-trend in gas-based generation is likely to continue in 2013-14. CMIE said that gas-based power generation will decline by around 10% in 2013-14.

On the other hand, around 7% rise in coal-based power generation in 2013-14. Increase in power generation capacity is expected to fuel the growth in coal-based generation. In 2013-14, coal-based generation capacity is expected to increase by around 17,000MW.

Coal availability in India is also expected to increase in 2013-14, on the back of higher production and imports of coal. CMIE is expecting a 4% rise in coal production in 2013-14. Coal imports are expected to increase by 15.9 % in 2013-14 to 157 million tonnes.

Recently, Coal India signed fuel supply agreement (FSA) with NTPC and other power generation companies, for power stations commissioned on or after March 2009. As per the FSA, Coal India will have to supply 80% of the average contracted quantity (ACQ) of coal in 2013-14. Of this, 65 % of ACQ will be met from domestic coal production, whereas for remaining 15 % Coal India is allowed to resort to imports, said CMIE in its report. This will ensure higher availability of coal for power generation.

The report said that hydel power generation is expected to grow by 9.3% in 2013-14 to 124.3 billion units. Increase in generation capacity and higher availability of water will lead to a healthy growth in hydel power generation. In 2013-14, hydel power generation capacity in India is expected to grow by 2,317 MW. Besides, assuming normal rainfall, water availability to hydel power stations is expected to improve this year.

Water availability plays a crucial role in efficient operation of a hydel power station. Due to water shortage, hydel power generation had declined by 12.9% in the preceding financial year. India had witnessed uneven and scanty rainfall in 2012-13, which impacted availability of water. However, the situation is much better this year, as the country received bountiful rains during June and July.

Nuclear power generation is expected to stage a modest recovery in 2013-14. After a mere 1.8% rise in 2012-13, CMIE expects nuclear power generation to grow by 5.9% in 2013-14 to 34.8 billion units.

Indian power system becomes largest operating synchronous grid in the world
Pankaj Shah, TNN | Jan 2, 2014, 08.22PM IST
LUCKNOW: The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has congratulated the power engineers of the country for synchronizing southern grid with national grid making Indian power system as the largest operating synchronous grid in the World.

Shailendra Dubey, secretary general of AIPEF said that the historical feat has been achieved on the evening of Dec, 31 2013 through commissioning Of Raichur-Solapur 765 KV transmission line. He said that with this, the mission of 'One Nation - One Grid - One Frequency' has been successfully completed. This line of 208 circuit kilometers (ckm) and 765/400 kV substations at Raichur and Sholapur has been commissioned five months ahead of its contractual schedule, that is, May 31, 2014 at a cost of approximately Rs 815 crores. With this interconnection, Indian power system has entered into a new era and become one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world with about 232GW of installed power generation capacity.

He said that Synchronous integration of southern grid with rest of the national power grid shall not only augment the inter-regional power transfer capacity of southern region but also relieve the congestion being experienced in few transmission corridors. This will be a great boost for further economic growth of the country. It is likely to take a few months before power flow over this line is stabilized.

Indian power system is operating through five regional grids and a pan India synchronous grid was envisaged for optimal utilization of the generation resources in the country. Till now, four regional grids namely northern, eastern, western and north-eastern regions (NEW grid) were connected synchronously and southern region (SR) was connected to this NEW grid through HVDC links. Synchronous interconnection of SR with NEW grid was envisaged through high capacity 765 kV Raichur - Sholapur lines, as an ultimate step towards establishment of an "All India Synchronous National Grid" facilitating bulk transfer of power across regional boundaries.

I think Japan fell back because they closed down their nuclear plants, but i maybe wrong

China though!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, how much are the figures in Megawatts? Can anyone tell? Like 5 million Gwh..how many Megawatts?

Yes its a fact that Japan's nuclear power production has gone down following the Fukushima incident but more important is the fact that we added 29,000 MW of power generation capacity in the last fiscal year only - country's installed power generation capacity has more than doubled to 2,48,509 MW in the past 10 years from 1,12,700 MW in 2004. Interestingly electricity generation grew by 5.7% in 2013-14 compared to 4% in 2012-13.

Even at the current pace we will be adding over 1,18,000 MW capacity by 2017!

Hey, how much are the figures in Megawatts? Can anyone tell? Like 5 million Gwh..how many Megawatts?

The total generation capactity is calculated by Terawatt, That is Calculation over all energy by one hr. like for a day you generate each hr 1000 watts (1 kw) means 24 kw in a day then it would said 24000 Kw / hr energy is produced. [so 24 hrs X 365 days =8760; Divide Energy of TW by this 8760 and you will found the total hr wise production]

India strongly need to used Unconventional Energy sources, we are 5th in using Wind energy, and also back in solar, China is far better in using it, Europe where sun light (Sun energy) is less they built solar power station, then why not India, we need the Advance Factory to built Solar Cell and also Solar Energy, and Also Wind Energies.........

Well there are one Invention (though I have think about that Idea but later found the Invention is already done :( ) That Photon Energy is used for producing the electricity, and The Nukes material like Uranium etc. give energies by way of Radio waves in Alpha, Bita and Gamma, which have far more more Energy, Is it possible to make such type of Photovoltaic Cell which produce energy from such Nukes Material, ie Radioactive materials, like Uranium etc. which give 24 hrs Energy by way of such Alpha, Bita and Gamma Waves??????????
If we work on it, nukes material, like used uranium etc. may be used for producing Electricity by using Photovoltaic like cell, which convert such Alpha, Bita, Gamma rays, or Atoms(photons) energy in to Electricity. Gamma rays have more energy then Sun's Photon Rays or Atoms. In world there is availibility or Tonnes of material as waste, In US which they were going to cover under some special cylinder and in some mountains, they may be used for this purpose, moreover Uranium lost 50% mass in some thousand yrs. so As per E=mc2 it produces some that much energy.

such type cell are already invented. I searched on net, and get nervous, as I lost one Invention. :( :)

We'll need all the power we can get and still we would be at shortage. The advancements in Thorium-based nuclear
power generation and renewable sources like Solar & Hydel are truly the way forward. They should ensure our energy
security for 100s, maybe 1,000s of years if we use them wisely.

We need to get right figures, like we have capacity to produce good energy by Coal, But Coal supply is poor and hence Generation is far less, so unit may have capacity to produce 1000MW but if no coal supply what would be mean of Capacity, We need to see the Total Production not the Capacity.
