India and Bangladesh on Wednesday agreed to support each other’s non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council. Apart from multilateral engagements, the two sides held discussions on bilateral development projects, defence cooperation and security issues during the official visit of Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra to Dhaka. Mr.
Kwatra met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of “continued commitment to the bilateral relationship, upholding Bangladesh as the pivot of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ and a key partner of its ‘Act East Policy,’” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

India’s 2021-’22 non-permanent membership at the UNSC ended last December and another stint is expected in 2028-’29. It is understood that internal discussion is underway in Dhaka for a possible non-permanent stint for Bangladesh at the UNSC during 2030-’31. The matter is however at an early stage and Bangladesh is expected to float this at multiple international venues in the coming months. The visit by Mr. Kwatra has come a fortnight before Dhaka’s Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen arrives here to participate in the G-20 foreign ministers’ meeting.

Guest country

Bangladesh is a “guest country” at this year’s G-20 summit that is being organized under India’s presidency. “India looks to the active participation of Bangladesh as the Guest Country at various events during India’s presidency of G-20,” said the MEA in a statement issued after the conclusion of Mr. Kwatra’s visit.

Mr. Kwatra and his counterpart in Dhaka held Foreign Office consultations and held “wide-ranging discussions covering all aspects of the relationship.”

“Both sides agreed to further strengthen ongoing bilateral cooperation in diverse areas, including the Government of India-funded concessional Lines of Credit, trade and investment, connectivity, power and energy, defence and security, and people-to-people ties,” the MEA has stated.

No issues with this but BD must oppose any permanent membership of India in the UNSC.

Chinese will veto any such proposal down hopefully. Ultimately none of the UNSC members want expansion of the group and dilution of their power.

Not only Chinese Veto, there is also a group specifically to oppose any new permanent member of UNSC. This group includes Italy, Argentina, Mexico, Pakistan and some other influential countries. Plus I think, all the Western countries would also oppose Indian permanent membership. India joining this exclusive club means UK and France would lose even more relevance in global affairs. They are only giving India some false hope which they will never fulfill.

If BAL stays on power then they will vote for india.
It depends on who needs the other. Bangladesh is not that important to Modi/India existance, however, BAL believes they need India to stay in power to continue their agenda.
It is not that far from now when BAL will start issuing statement like vedic Indians performed intergalactic travel, plastic surgeries and invented internet !

Don't keep your hopes high for BNP either, they will fall in line.
I doubt it. India's open and ugly support of Awamis embittered and enraged BNP enough. They are not showing it due to strategic reasons. They know very well, in this current situation when unsetting present autocratic govt. is their main struggle, they can not afford to alienate any foreign power. If BNP somehow form govt. after 2024, it will not repeat some of the mistake like before such as ignoring Northeastern India's separatists taking shelter in Bangladesh or ignoring militant Islamist groups, but they will also not give India any unilateral benefit at the expense of Bangladesh like the present govt. is doing. So, no free transit for India and unequal trade benefits.

He he he, you have no idea about BNP do you? The moment hasina dies india will lose its only (powerful) friend in Bangladesh. After hasina even BAL will not do anything pro india...

My prediction is after death of hasina we will only act when our territory is being used by the separatists to maintain a plausible deniability. Thats it. The trade will go on...

In proper democratic Bangladesh where a reasonably free and fair election happens, no political party can act as the Indian stooge and hope to win election. India is getting unfair privilege only because democracy doesn't exist right now in BD and the current ruling party depends on India to remain in power rather than popular mandate. If India perpetuates this anti-people stance in Bangladesh for long, it will surely boomerang them in one day. I don't think, BNP will ever forget how previous two elections were robbed by Awami League with solely Indian support. Bharati officials are so confident in their dealings with Awamis that they don't even hide their open support for this particular political party as if Hasina will forever rule Bangladesh.

Delhi ‘fully supports’ Hasina’s leadership in Bangladesh, says India external affairs secretary

Does this statement sound sweet to the opposition parties in Bangladesh or 70 percent people who want this govt. to go?
